POSITION DESCRIPTION:
We have an entry-level opportunity available in our San Diego, CA office for an Underwriting Associate. The Underwriting Associate will learn on the job and become an experienced & successful Workers' Comp Underwriter after successful completion of the training period (approximately twelve months). The Underwriting Associate will be trained on the essential aspects for succeeding in the position, which include workers’ compensation law, policy processing, risk selection, and pricing procedures. The Associate will participate in our cohort program which includes on-the-job training under the guidance of a supervisor and/or mentor, as well as classroom-style training. 
 
Duties will include both team and individual work, assigned reading and learning the duties of an Underwriter to be able to manage a book of business, as well as ongoing training sessions and meetings. As the Associate gains knowledge and critical thinking skills and is able to apply the training, s/he will be granted increased autonomy over their workload as they develop into a fully proficient Underwriter. 
 
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Gain an understanding of workers' compensation law, regulation and policy contracts
  • Learn general, industry and proprietary computer programs and systems
  • Participate in a training curriculum on workers’ compensation underwriting 
  • Develop strong analytical, technical and negotiation skills
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S.) in Economics, Business, Finance, Risk Management, or Political Science from four-year College or University. 1-2 years of internship and/or work experience is preferred, but not required.
  • LANGUAGE ABILITY: Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • MATH ABILITY:  Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. 
  • REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply good judgment to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • COMPUTER SKILLS: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft word processing software; Microsoft spreadsheet software; and be proficient on applicable databases, systems and vendor software programs.
