The Director of Online User Experience will lead the next generation home improvement design and lead one of the largest online home improvement experiences. This role is a true advocate for the customer designing innovative solutions for creative and interaction problems across multiple digital platforms. Plays a key role in the development of online strategy, including defining and prioritizing new site features/ functionality; maximizing site usability; increasing conversion rate; and identifying and enhancing revenue enhancing programs. Leads research and design efforts to determine how customers interact with and relate to The Home Depot's ecommerce platform. Works closely with our site optimization, product engineering and product management teams to identify short-term performance issues and long-term opportunities. Inspires new customer engagement experiences and ensures user-centered design techniques are incorporated into the project lifecycle. This role requires an innovative, yet systematic designer, thinker, and problem solver interested in attracting, retaining and developing a team of user experience professionals.



Major Tasks, Responsibilities and Key Accountabilities:
  • 30%-Develop, deliver and own the end-to-end UX design process and deliverables including user flows, wireframes and prototypes, functional/business rules and requirements to effectively conceptualize and communicate high-level UX design strategies and detailed interaction behaviors across all platforms and devices.
  • 20%-Collaborate with engineering, product management, and functional leaders to define initiatives and projects. Partner with Product Managers and Software Engineers to build consensus around design requirements and scope. Partners in the prioritization process to manage and execute against the release schedule.
  • 20%-Lead and develop team of user experience designers and architects that translate requirements into detailed page layouts/UIs, color palettes, typography, wireframes, system flows, iconography and user interface elements.
  • 10%-Create comprehensive strategies and triangulate data from different sources to develop a broad picture of UX opportunities. Manage effectiveness through performance metrics and impact to customer purchase decisions.
  • 10%-Communicate to executives and other key stakeholders the strategies that drive user experience and the vision for future improvements that support customer needs and business objectives. Define and evangelize the design process throughout the organization
  • 10%-Conduct competitive and industry research to identify best practices and serves as a resource to the broader Online team on these issues.

  • Position Reports to the Vice President, Online Interconnected Experience
  • Number of Direct Reports: 5

Environment:
  • Located in a comfortable indoor area. Any unpleasant conditions would be infrequent and not objectionable.
Travel:
  • Typically requires overnight travel less than 25% of the time.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be eighteen years of age
  • Must pass the Drug Test
  • Must pass pre-employment tests if applicable

Education Required:
  • The knowledge, skills and abilities typically acquired through the completion of a bachelor's degree program or equivalent degree in a field of study related to the job.

Years of Relevant Work Experience: 10 years

Physical Requirements:
  • Most of the time is spent sitting in a comfortable position and there is frequent opportunity to move about. On rare occasions there may be a need to move or lift light articles.

Additional Qualifications:
  • Bachelors in Human Computer Interaction (HCI), Psychology, Information Science, Interactive Design, or related field
  • 7 years exp in user experience design
  • Experience with mobile design and development
  • Deep understanding of ideation, prototyping, testing, design frameworks and concept visualization for an e-commerce site
  • Deep understanding of web analytics and A/B and multivariate interface testing

Preferred Qualifications:
  • MBA or Masters degree in computer science, cognitive science or interaction design
  • 10 years deep knowledge of software design or ecommerce technologies, principles, and processes
  • Previous ecommerce and/or e-Marketing experience at national-level ecommerce site
  • 3 years experience developing user experience solutions with agile methodology
  • Experience with eCommerce design
  • Experience leading UX teams in a fast-paced ecommerce environment

  • Solid understanding of user-centered design processes and ability to balance customer needs with business goals in developing solutions
  • Proven analytical ability with demonstrated financial business planning skills
  • Ability to effectively negotiate conflict and persuade others on the merits of a design or other user experience solution
  • Demonstrated ability to develop innovative solutions and apply cutting edge user interface techniques
  • Solid understanding of the relationship between successful user interface design and performance metrics
  • Ability to lead cross-functionally with IT, Product Management, and Merchandising functions
  • Ability to assess, prioritize, and make trade-offs against business, technical, and user constraints
  • Ability to quickly immerse into corporate culture and align with the priorities and needs
