Job Description

Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse - RN PICC, provides direct nursing care to patients requiring insertion and maintenance of peripherally inserted catheters in accordance with established policies, procedures and protocols of the healthcare organization.

Responsibilities:

  • Inserts peripherally placed central venous, mid-line and peripheral I.V. catheters.
  • Monitors, records and communicates patient condition as appropriate.
  • Serves as a resource regarding insertion and maintenance of peripherally inserted catheters, products and procedures.
  • Evaluates status of interventions and patient goals for the purpose of reassessment, revision of plan of care and discharge planning.
  • Provides instruction and information to staff, patients and their families regarding use and care of peripherally inserted catheters.
  • Assess patient's condition, venous access needs, and learning needs, based on systematic data collection having mastered assessment skills for PICC (or midline) and screening criteria.
  • Inserts a minimum of six PICCs per month in adult settings, or six PICCs per year in pediatrics.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities by providing information about each PICC (or midline) insertion to management as requested.
  • Documents insertion of PICC (or midline), teaching, confirmation of tip location, and medication administration in accordance with hospital nursing policy.
  • Provides teaching to groups in education programs targeting CVC care.
  • Ensures charges for insertion are entered properly and equipment is used in an efficient manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • May be required to be "on-call."


Qualifications

Licenses/Certifications/Registration:

  • Required Credential(s):
    • Certified Basic BLS Provider specializing in Basic Life Support credentialed from the American Heart Association (AHA) obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date. 
    • Licensed Registered Nurse credentialed from the Texas Board of Nursing .  

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science 
    • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) is preferredCompletion of eight (8) hours CEU approved PICC education class is required to be completed within two weeks of hire date Completion of Seton PICC Competency Checklist is required to be completed within two (2) months of hire date for associates working with adult populations and within six (6) months of hire date for associates working with pediatric populations NOTE: By January 1, 2021, all associates in this job title must have completed a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) or higher nursing degree

Work Experience:

  • Two (2) years of experience in acute care, intensive care, or emergency nursing is required. Experience must be in the population setting of the department (i.e. adult or pediatric).
