Information Technology Support Specialist

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

Installs, maintains and repairs computers, servers, printers, network hubs, network switches, and related equipment and systems; Installs, maintains, updates, and manages computer operating systems, operating environments, Internet browsers, and other utility software that may be required;

Inspects, troubleshoots, assembles, installs, adjusts, and tests various types all computers and associated peripherals used by the school division; Installs surge suppressors, UPS and other related equipment needed for the proper operation of computers and servers;

Assists in the analyses of network protocol configuration issues and configures TCP/IP, IPX/SPX clients for proper network and Internet access. Diagnoses defects, troubleshoots to the component level, repairs, or replaces defective parts; Performs preventive and corrective maintenance; cleans and checks computer units on a regular basis;

Performs software and hardware installations on stand-alone computers and network servers;

Installs, repairs, and maintains all types and brands of computers and related equipment;

Services, repairs and replaces hard drives, disk drives, network adaptors, soundcards, power supplies, motherboards and all other components within stand-alone computers and servers; Read electronic schematic diagrams to diagnose circuit problems; Repairs multi-layered printed circuit boards and surface mount devices;

Provides technical advice to end users; Trains end users in the use of educational computer equipment;

Evaluates the integration of new operating systems, computers and peripherals into existing networks.

Assists with the evaluation of software and analyzes for proper operation with new operating systems with in the current network environment. Assists with research, information gathering, and planning for technology implementation;

Monitors technical publications, industry news and updates to stay knowledgeable of emerging technology; Exercises independent judgment in planning, scheduling, organizing, controlling and monitoring of daily workload; Coordinates daily work schedule with supervisor, office staff and team members as required; Assist in the acquisition, storage, preparation and disposal of surplus equipment;

Performs related tasks as required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Thorough knowledge of the operation, uses and capabilities of computer equipment; thorough knowledge of methods and techniques used to maintain and repair computer equipment; thorough knowledge of Microsoft Operating systems (all levels); basic knowledge of Linux operating system; working knowledge of network operating systems; working knowledge of network protocol; working knowledge of software applications used through out the division; thorough knowledge of antivirus software applications; thorough knowledge in data recovery techniques; extensive knowledge with imaging and partitioning hard drives; general knowledge of telecommunications and Internet browsers and protocols (TCP/IP and IPX/SPX); thorough knowledge of the hazards of the work and of necessary safety precautions; ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions; ability to read and understand maintenance manuals and to work from sketches, drawings and diagrams; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and vendors.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and three years of full-time experience in the maintenance and repair of electronic computer equipment with at least two years experience working in a network environment.

A+ certification required Network + certification preferred.

 

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:

This is a non-exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act. Performs responsible highly technical work performing preventive and corrective maintenance on computer equipment and associated peripherals as well as assisting with the installation, repair and maintenance of network equipment and related software. Work is performed under regular supervision.

 

This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, hazards, and atmospheric conditions.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
