Overview:

Pharmacy technicians are responsible for preparing doses under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, as well as delivering medications to patient care units and partnering with pharmacists, nurses, and other key members of the healthcare team. There are opportunities to learn basic production and IV compounding. You must be motivated and willing to learn multiple areas of Inpatient Pharmacy, in a fast-paced environment.

Our East Bank Pharmacy makes the IV nutrition solutions for all hospitals within the M Health Fairview System. We also provide care for patients in our active Solid Organ Transplant and Bone Marrow Transplant programs.

Location: UMMC East Bank, located in Minneapolis, MN.

Hours: 48 hours bi-weekly

Schedule: day/evening/night shift, with every other weekend dedication.

Responsibilities/Job Description:
Prepare, label, and deliver medications and supplies accurately and safely, as assigned and in accordance with all legal requirements and policies under the supervision of a licensed Pharmacist.
Calculate and measure correct dose, select correct drug and diluents, compound, and label products accurately and safely.
Compound admixtures including Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN), Immunoglobulin mixtures (IGG, ATG), irrigations, infusions, antibiotic piggybacks and syringes, chemotherapy, and other sterile products.
Demonstrate knowledge of calibrating TPN compounding pump, packaging machines and other technology.

Deliver medications and supplies to patient care areas.

Process medication orders or prescriptions and maintain patient profiles accurately in the inpatient and outpatient pharmacy information systems.

Operate equipment and follow appropriate standard work when using automated distribution cabinets (ADC) for refilling, inventory tasks, basic reports, and maintenance.

Prepare medication refills for restocking ADCs.

After a pharmacist or Tech-Check-Tech Technician checks for accuracy restock medications in the appropriate ADC.

Manage ADC inventories including re-supplying, checking for outdates, etc.

Prepare, order, process, and recharge stock.
Distribute completed orders appropriately.
Audit medication storage areas for proper storage of medications, dating and appropriate medication stock.
Fill and distribute routine stock orders for patient care areas.
Prepare invoices for payment.
Assist in processing returns and outdated drugs for return credit.
As assigned, ensure correct inventory, deliver and maintenance of files related to controlled substances throughout the hospital.
Complete work activities through effective management of time.
Train and precept learners and other employees on core job functions.
Submit and implement process improvement ideas to improve pharmacy processes.

Answer and appropriately triage incoming phone calls to various areas of the pharmacy department and/or staff.
Communicate appropriately, using all options available including e-mail.
Handle cash register transactions accurately and verify outpatient prescription insurance coverage.
Demonstrate knowledge of billing and accurately process charges and credits.
As assigned, ensure charge capture and correct billing of all manually billed items from patient care areas.
Complete administrative functions as required.
Audit medication storage areas for proper storage of medications, dating and appropriate medication stock.
Assist pharmacy buyer as needed to order medications, prepare invoices for payments, etc.…when applicable.
Assist in processing returns and outdated drugs for return credit when applicable.

As assigned, ensure correct inventory, delivery and maintenance of files related to controlled substances throughout the hospital.
Qualifications:

Required Education:

Three months of pharmacy technician experience/training or a bachelor's degree

Required Experience:

Three plus months of pharmacy technician experience

Required License/Certification/Registration:

Current or pending registration with the MN Board of Pharmacy
Must be nationally certified upon hire.

Preferred Education:

Graduate of Pharmacy Technician Program
Associate’s or bachelor’s degree

Preferred Experience:

12 months of previous Pharmacy or other Healthcare Experience
