PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

The Medical Specialist 2 will provide primary care to assigned patients, who live in OPWDD residences for developmentally disabled adults.

 

·       The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring the diagnosis and treatment of all conditions of the assigned patients.   This will include coordinating care of sub-specialists, imaging facilities, and laboratory testing.  Logistical coordination of care will be assisted by OPWDD staff, but medical interpretation and medical communications are the responsibility of the incumbent.

·       The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring all appropriate preventive care including all immunizations according to CDC/ACIP standards for assigned patients.

·       The incumbent will provide overnight telephone coverage as “Practitioner On Call” on a rotating schedule with the rest of the Medical Staff.

·       Additional duties will include working with medical and nursing staff on improving care, medical representation on teams, participation in facility wide committees and compliance with all oversight entities (i.e. OPWDD, NY State Department of Health).

·       Full compliance with Office of People with Developmental Disabilities policies and regulations.

·       Maintain qualifications for Specialty and for Medicare and Medicaid certification of provider status.

·       Other duties assigned appropriate to the title.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

 

·       Possession of a license to practice medicine in New York State AND eligibility for certification by a Member Board of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) in your specialty.

             OR

·       Medicaid and Medicare certified.

             OR

 

·       Current Medical Specialist 2.

                            OR

·       Eligible for 70.1 or 52.6 transfer by way of current permanent status in a title deemed comparable to Medical Specialist 2, by the Department of Civil Service.

·       Ability to accurately observe and document conditions relating to individuals welfare and security.

NY HELPS This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). HELPS Program titles may be filled via a non-competitive appointment. This means that you do not need to take an exam to qualify, but you do need to meet the minimum qualifications of the title.

If you are hired under the HELPS Program, you will be first be appointed as a temporary employee. In May 2024, if you are performing successfully in the position, your appointment will be changed from temporary to permanent non-competitive. Once you are in permanent status, your official probationary period will begin and you may take any promotion exam for which you are qualified. At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), employees hired under NY HELPS are expected to have their permanent non-competitive employment status converted to permanent competitive status. You will not have to take an exam to gain permanent competitive status.
