About the role

This is a key management and leadership role for Symetra's Actuarial Data and Modernization program. The Assistant Vice President of Actuary & Modernization will provide vision for and lead the overall effort and will collaborate with employees across the enterprise to optimize and enhance the actuarial capabilities and output. This leader will create a multi-year modernization roadmap and will prioritize and direct the program initiatives. This leader will have significant interaction with senior leaders from other departments, including recommending best practices for risk analytics, data management, process automation and controls in order to build strong partnerships across the business. The individual has strong technical skills and experience managing analytics teams. They will develop the modernization control and governance framework, select and drive adoption of new tools and technologies, lead department-wide skills training, and develop a plan to recruit and hire new professionals to augment current actuarial skillsets.

What you will do

  • Drive planning and implementation of Symetra's Actuarial Data and Modernization program by serving as the overall program director. Partner with internal and external resources to develop a specific roadmap of initiatives and manage activities across the program to execute the roadmap within budget. Align the modernization program with Symetra Empowers and support initiatives elsewhere in the company to enable the modernization roadmap. Develop and monitor key performance indicators to demonstrate progress.
  • Oversee actuarial experience studies function for Life and Retirement divisions. Drive automation of processes, strong data governance, and enhanced analytical capabilities in order to provide valuable insights to management.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders across the enterprise to identify opportunities for significant enhancements to Symetra's actuarial, risk, and analytics capabilities. Coordinate Actuarial Modernization with other enterprise initiatives such as Symetra's cloud migration, manage dependencies, and serve as the primary actuarial liaison to other modernization efforts across the organization. Ensure actuarial software and consulting services are delivering maximum value for the business.
  • Take a lead role in implementing data and technical requirements for Long Duration Targeted Improvement accounting.
  • Support Symetra's offshore reinsurance program with data and technical capabilities
  • Manage implementation for actuarial, finance data, and system architecture in partnership with Data Analytics and technology groups. Serve as a key liaison between IT, Data Analytics, and Actuarial.
  • Champion efforts to re-think actuarial development beyond actuarial exams and traditional career paths. Expand development to focus on training for new tools and technology and design new and exciting career paths for actuaries at the company. Lead training initiatives and design curriculum to drive new technology adoption within the department.
  • Management related duties, including short term goal setting, employee development, facilitate team engagement and collaboration with the various other actuarial teams, and other administrative activities. Create and reinforce a policy of continuous improvement within the team. Align employees' development goals with team and business goals and initiatives. Create a supportive work environment for career and personal competency development. Build staffing plans, interview, assess technical and leadership talent, and hire qualified staff. Compensation

Salary Range: $177,600 - $296,100 plus eligibility for annual bonus program

Who you are

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience, with strong mathematical and/or programming background. Advanced technical proficiency in Actuarial Science, Data Science, Programming, Statistics, or similar field.
  • 7+ years of insurance related actuarial experience with direct experience leading technology teams or initiatives.
  • FSA preferred.
  • Implementation experience with Agile development methodologies. Strong SQL and Python/R development skills.
