The base salary range for a Claims Manager is $79,000 to $114,000. Actual salaries will vary by geographic location and are based on factors such as candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, competencies, and internal equity. In addition to base compensation, this role is eligible for an annual incentive plan based on company performance and individual performance.

Manager of Claims Overview

  • Must have strong knowledge and experience with Short Term Disability, Worksite, and Life Insurance products
  • Candidates must have a minimum of 3 years experience managing a team
  • 5-7 years of progressive claims experience is a minimum requirement
  • Provides leadership to Claims Supervisors through guidance, coordination and implementation of department procedures and company policies, and serving as a role model.
  • Responsible for staff development, prepares performance review, promotion criteria and administrative action documentation; reviews with staff as necessary.
  • Processes and conducts over authority reviews and releases benefits. Responds to customer inquires and assists with escalated claims issues. Works with DOL, DOI and vendors on claim questions, reporting or investigative issues.
  • Prepares and reviews reports on claims elements including turnaround time, error rates and workload distribution. Provides oversight and direction regarding customer demand and recommends adjustments to claim processing and operations.

Essential Duties

  • Monitors team performance and quality and provides training, coaching, and oversight of team training on a consistent basis.
  • Researches, plans and prepares departmental reports. Evaluates solutions and processes and can approve implementation at a team level.
  • Processes, reviews and audits claim files and releases benefits of processed claims. Assists team with escalated customer complaints according to Best Practices.
  • Manages employee goals, performance, and timekeeping. Conducts performance management, coaches, and approves personnel recommendations. Manages interviewing, recruiting, and onboarding process.
  • Monitors customer satisfaction in an effort to drive action plans for improvement.

Management Level Expectations

  • Monitors team performance and quality and provides training, coaching, and oversight of team training.
  • Provides employee feedback on a bi-weekly or weekly basis.
  • Communicates effectively across departments and with customers.
  • Ensures succession plans are in place and eliminates single points of failure through cross training.
  • Works positively across departments, modeling the Values and inclusiveness of all employees.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong working knowledge of Short Term Disability is a minimum requirement
  • Strong knowledge of general accounting principals.
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology.
  • Customer service skills.
  • Advanced MS Office skills, particularly Excel.
  • Excellent verbal, written communication skills including the ability to compose professional correspondence and present to internal and external parties.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to assist and guide others.
  • Ability to manage staff using appropriate tools and techniques.
  • Ability to maintain attention to detail and a low error rate.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and work within time constraints.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Strong working knowledge of common business practices such as payroll set up, employee deductions, and taxation.
  • Ability to plan, build, and execute the tactical aspects of a project.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience
  • 5-7 years of progressive claims experience
  • Minimum of 3 years experience managing a claims team
  • Or, equivalent military experience.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Life, disability, and leave management claims
  • Completion of LOMA 280/281 and 290/291.
  • Experience with FINEOS or COMPASS based claims platform
  • Experience with PFML
