Description

This is a paid internship, range of $19/hr - $35/hr (depending on role and qualifications) for those currently pursuing undergraduate degrees and higher rates for those currently pursuing graduate level degrees.

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

Sound Transit has an exciting Construction and Employee Safety internship available for the summer of 2024! This position may be eligible for remote or hybrid options. This is a greatopportunity for currently enrolledundergraduate or graduate students who want to observe and participate in real world application of their current field of study with a focus on Construction and Employee Safety. Students from diverse or underrepresented backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Organizing and coordinating a variety of projects initiated in Sound Transit's Safety Department.
  • Maintaining records and databases for a variety of projects.
  • Attending safety department meetings and workshops for project assignments.
  • Preparing materials and attending meetings to support transit initiatives.
  • Participates in weekly site safety walks at Sound Transit construction projects.
  • Advises on industrial hygiene programs for all Agency employees by anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and recommending controls for environmental and physical hazards for the health and well-being of our workers and passengers.
  • Collaborates with Health and Safety Specialists to ensure that Sound Transit's health and safety program is effective in practice.

POTENTIAL PROJECTS:

  • Policy analysis of Safety plans and programs.
  • Test, monitor and provide recommendations for transit employee safety for wildfire smoke.
  • Analysis of safety partnership management program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants must be a current college student in good academic standing, enrolled in an accredited associate, bachelor's or graduate degree program in Environmental, Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene or other non-technical discipline or relevant two-year certificate.

ADDITIONAL SKILLS:

  • Independent self-starter and ability to work well in a team.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work graciously and effectively with the public.
  • Flexibility to work in a fast-paced environment on a multitude of projects.
  • Interest with project planning concepts and transportation policies and practices.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft office products - Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Familiarity with SharePoint.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Familiar with Washington State Labor and Industry processes.
  • Understanding of Principles of Industrial Hygiene.
  • Knowledge of General Construction and Occupational Safety Standards.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work is performed in a standard office environment.
