About this job

WHY VEIR?

Giving everyone in the world access to clean, reliable, affordable energy will require substantial expansion of global electricity transmission networks. VEIR is developing a new generation of High Temperature Superconductor (HTS)-based transmission lines, enabling long distance, reliable, low loss, cost-effective power transfer in far smaller right-of-ways. VEIR's innovations overcome the main barriers to transmission expansion, enabling the world to access the very lowest cost renewable power.

THE ROLE:

VEIR is seeking a Manufacturing Engineer to join our team. This individual will design, manage, and improve VEIR's manufacturing line for HTS cables.

You Are:

  • Problem Solver by nature. You love to take on engineering challenges and solve them by applying sound engineering principles. When faced with a seemingly unpassable hurdle, you assess all the available options and their risks given the project's objectives and requirements to identify the solution that satisfies the requirements with the lowest risk and cost.
  • An experienced manufacturing engineer. You have spent many years of your career designing, operating, and servicing manufacturing assembly line(s). You understand quality control methods and can create and implement QC programs that satisfy VEIR's projects.
  • A strong communicator. You keep others informed as you perform your daily tasks. You understand the importance of communicating your successes, challenges, and delays. As the owner and operator of the assembly line, you must find effective ways to communicate the status, capabilities, and limitations of the line.
  • A capable collaborator. You understand that we can accomplish more as a team than as individuals. Working by yourself is essential, but the ability to help the group achieve its objectives is key. You also have experience successfully engaging external vendors and contractors in support of your project's objectives.
  • Safety Focused. You exemplify the best in our industry in visible safety leadership.
  • Curious by nature, you want to understand why things work and how technological decisions are made.

You Will:

  • Be responsible for VEIR's assembly line, its installation, commissioning, and operation.
  • Build and manage a team of manufacturing technicians and engineers to operate and service the assembly line.
  • Establish a quality control program for the products manufactured on this assembly line.
  • Create and review operating and service procedures.
  • Create and review test plans for samples manufactured on the assembly line
  • Manage the build-order queue for the line.
  • Manage operator resources to meet the production demand.
  • Create and implement professional training tools for operators.
  • Ensure safe operations for all personnel and equipment.

Basic Qualifications:

  • At least 10 years of experience in a process or manufacturing engineering role.
  • Strong technical knowledge and experience in controls and instrumentation engineering.
  • Strong understanding of risk management and analysis.
  • Strong understanding of quality manufacturing standards (ISO9001, Six Sigma, or others).
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and project management skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to make data-driven decisions.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple priorities, and deliver results within tight deadlines.
  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, Energy, Physics, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience operating a helical winding assembly line for HTS cables.
  • Experience with manufacturing processes that use fragile raw materials like HTS tape.
  • Experience with instrumentation and controls for an automatic assembly line.
  • Strong background in process or manufacturing engineering

Expected Outcomes in 12 Months:

  • 3 months: Identify VEIR's manufacturing capability and communicate the limitations of the line.
  • 6 months: Prepare FAT criteria and acceptance parameters for the line; and manage the installation and commissioning.
  • 12 months: Create and implement a manufacturing operations program that aligns with VEIR's projects, pilots, and demonstrations.
