Recreation Program Leader II - Teens

The City of Takoma Park Recreation Department is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Recreation Program Leader II to plan and administer all aspects of the Teen Lounge. Under the guidance and direction of the Teen Program Supervisor, the incumbent will work with youth and teens grades 6-12. Candidates must have the ability to think critically and creatively, and be a motivated team player with good communication skills.

The schedule is generally 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Mondays through Fridays, during the MCPS school year. Occasional Saturday and/or Sunday hours may be required.

Typical duties of the position include:

• Providing customer service, direct leadership, and general supervision of the Teen Lounge;
• Maintaining accurate records of attendance, sign-in and sign-out sheets, participant information forms, incident reports, program evaluations, and equipment and supplies inventory, and recording other program data such as residency, participation in activities, field trips, special events, etc;
• Positively enforcing discipline and abiding by the Recreation Department's discipline policy;
• Providing for a clean, safe, and secure environment for youth in grades 6-12;
• Executing City-mandated COVID protocol and procedures;
• Researching and developing programs for youth and teens in line with the Recreation Department's Teen Program mission and vision;
• Communicating with youth and teens to determine their needs and interests;
• Developing daily, weekly, and monthly lesson plans, including the Mentorship Monday program;
• Organizing/cleaning space and supplies;
• Assisting with set-up and break down of the program;
• Contributing ideas and providing information regarding assigned program responsibilities to supervisor;
• Assisting in coordinating with Recreation Center staff to increase Teen Night participation including potentially transporting teens to Recreation Center;
• Purchasing needed supplies for Teen Lounge services when needed;
• Maintaining a professional demeanor in all dealings with youth, fellow staff members, parents, visitors, etc.;
• Administering first-aid, if necessary.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required to be successful are:

• Two to three years of progressively responsible experience working with youth, or any combination of education and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job;
• Excellent interpersonal communication and writing skills;
• Must be service oriented and have the ability to organize, multi-task, and meet deadlines;
• Ability to guide, direct, and supervise youth and teens;
• Ability to create effective working and mentoring relationships with diverse participants, staff members, and parents;
• Able to provide leadership, have fun, be flexible, and share enthusiasm;
• Ability to carry or lift 20 lbs. with or without accommodation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Must be at least 21 years of age;
• Must have valid Driver's License;
• Must possess or have the ability to possess Standard CPR/First Aid certifications.

The hourly wage for this position is expected to be between $17.16 and $20.22 and will be offered at a level consistent with the experience and qualifications of the candidate.
