Job Description

Under limited supervision, performs Nuclear Criticality Safety (NCS) Engineering job functions as assigned by management.

Typical job responsibilities assist and support management in the oversight review of PPPO prime contractor NCS program implementation, including reviews of contractor NCS evaluations, NCS inputs to engineering for system/facility design; characterization, D&D, demolition, and disposal. This may include duties or activities in one more of the following areas, in addition to other duties assigned:

  • Tracking and trending NCS performance.
  • Preparing oversight reviews of NCS Evaluations (NCSEs) and NCS Determinations (NCSDs), calculations, and other PPPO contractor NCS Program documents.
  • Performs oversight reviews of PPPO contractor nuclear maintenance and NCS operability or engineering evaluations when necessary.
  • Performs oversight review of PPPO contractor disposition of problem reports.
  • Performs project engineering functions involving monitoring of progress and preparation of procedures.
  • Identifies and evaluates project issues and problems.
  • Prepares forecasts, quality take-offs and change orders.
  • Conducts feasibility studies and evaluates potential technologies.
  • Performs research to analyze and validate design or theory concepts.
  • Responsible for technical ownership of assigned NCS projects.
  • Subject matter expert for multiple assigned NCS projects.
  • Responsible for training preparation and facilitation.
  • Evaluates operations and proposed modifications to determine compliance with applicable DOE and industry consensus standards, federal, state or local statues and regulations as well as project/company policy.
  • Prepares NCS health recovery and improvement plans.
  • Performs oversight reviews of PPPO contractor preliminary and final specifications and designs.
  • Lead role for projects as assigned.
  • Partners with senior NCS Engineers in completing assigned engineering tasks and job functions.
  • Ensures compliance with DOE regulations and standards.
  • Interfaces with other technical and production organization to compile technical information required for document preparation.
  • Interfaces with other groups inside and outside the organization and management.
  • Serves as a resource for lower level positions.
  • Provides assigned technical or functional support to team members.
  • Performs a variety of tasks complex in nature.
  • Other job related duties as assigned.
  • Maintains knowledge of and demonstrates ability to perform work safely in accordance with all approved safety policies, procedures and applicable regulations and performs assigned duties in a safe manner.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in science or engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • Twenty years' experience in NCS, including development of NCSEs or directly applicable experience.
  • Recent working knowledge of MCNP, KENO or similar models and use of double contingency principle.
  • Knowledge of DOE and nuclear industry criticality safety standards and requirements.
  • Ability to perform independent criticality safety reviews of nuclear facilities, criticality safety evaluations, and facility safety basis documents to ensure that applicable DOE and nuclear industry requirements are met.
  • Experience in principles of nuclear physics, chemistry, mathematics, mechanics of materials, and the ability to read process and equipment drawings.
  • Experience in supporting DOE operations and designs.
  • Gaseous Diffusion Plant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • NRC experience
  • D&D, D&R or S&M project experience
  • Nuclear facility experience

This position may require the ability to obtain a government clearance. This position may require reviews and test for absence of any illegal drugs along with a background investigation by the Federal government in order to obtain an access authorization prior to employment, and may require subsequent reinvestigations may be required.
