Job Objective:

We are looking for a responsible custodian to maintain and protect our facilities. The external and internal appearance of a building reflects on the occupants. It is important for a custodian to be careful and thorough in working, cleaning, and tidying the premises, as well as preventing vandalism.

The ideal candidate will be experienced in a custodian role focused on building upkeep. They will have great physical endurance to cover a large space. A keen eye for detail and diligence are also imperative in this custodial maintenance job.

Perform custodial care and maintenance of The Salvation Army buildings, vehicles, grounds, and supplies. Manage volunteers and community service workers assigned.

What You Will Do:

  • Perform maintenance and minor repairs including replacing broken switches, fixing door handles, minor leaks, painting, etc.
  • Report damages and oversee repairs, while supervising repairmen
  • Operate and supervise the use of all industrial cleaning equipment to clean floors and furniture
  • Regularly maintenance all equipment
  • Supervise maintenance/custodial staff and assigned volunteers.
  • Ensure spaces are prepared for the next day by taking out trash, straightening and tidying furniture and dusting surfaces
  • Setup facilities for meetings, classrooms, conferences, events, etc. inside and outside the building.
  • Complete custodial duties as needed.
  • Maintain outer premises by watering plants, shoveling snow, cleaning entrances, walkways, and parking lot. Put down salt in bad weather.
  • Request purchase of supplies and equipment as needed
  • Secure all facilities after operating hours by locking doors, closing windows and setting up the alarm
  • Attend to emergencies when necessary
  • Attend safety meetings and other related meetings
  • Take classes as required in cleaning methods and techniques, new products, First Aid, CPR, and working relationships
  • Assist with inventory control and security
  • Safely operate all vehicles and other job-related equipment
  • Support and enforce all policies and safety regulations and guidelines, etc.
  • Maintain inventory record of all equipment and supplies.
  • Other duties as assigned by Corps Officers

Minimum Qualifications: Have essential physical and mental capabilities in the following: Interpersonal skills, memory, attention to detail, follow directions, comprehension, calculating, reading, writing, speaking, evaluating, mathematics, organizing and innovation. Must have ability to handle cleaning equipment and outdoor equipment.

Education: High school diploma or equivalent is preferred but not required.

Background Checks: Position requires a background check to be completed and all background check results will be reviewed.

Experience: Proven experience as custodian, janitor or in a similar role. Knowledge of use and maintenance of industrial cleaning equipment and appliances. Knowledge of safe disposal of chemical liquids and other hazardous components. Familiarity with basic landscaping and handyman practices.

Certifications: Must have a valid driver's license and maintain The Salvation Army Driver's qualification standard; must complete Safe From Harm training within the first 90 days of employment.

Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to speak, write and understand English in a manner sufficient for effective communication with leadership, volunteers, and field personnel.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of cleaning, building maintenance, and floor maintenance.
  • Attention to detail and conscientiousness.
  • Ability to relate well and work with others required.
  • Ability to plan and schedule work as needed.
  • Ability to work without immediate supervision required.

Supervisory Responsibility: Will supervise maintenance/custodial staff, volunteers, and community service workers on a regular basis.

Physical Requirements Include:

  • Good speaking, hearing and vision ability, and excellent manual dexterity

  • Strength and stamina that requires bending, squatting, walking, and stand for extended periods.

Travel: Position will require occasional travel to pick up donations. Position may involve taking participants to camp or other corps for programs.

Working Conditions: Good working condition with exposure to cleaning chemicals, solvents, and occasionally the weather. But with none present to the extent of being disagreeable. Full-time position: may require some weekend and evening work that will be worked out ahead of time.
