CLASSIFICATION DESCRIPTION

CLASSIFICATION TITLE: PUBLIC WORKS CREW SUPERVISOR - CERTIFIED


PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

The purpose of this classification is to perform skilled, supervisory work functions to oversee maintenance and/or repair tasks for a variety of infrastructure components within the City's Public Works Department.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals; interviews and participates in hiring employees; trains employees.


Coordinates daily work activities as they relate to the City's infrastructure components as necessary; organizes, prioritizes, and assigns work; develops work schedules to ensure adequate coverage; creates and distributes work schedules and assignments; approves leave time and reviews usage; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; consults with assigned staff, assists with complex/problem situations, and provides technical expertise.


Responds to complaints and questions related to maintenance issues and activities; provides information; researches problems, and initiates problem resolution.


Operates one or more of the following: hand tools, dump truck, backhoe, tractor, mower, trimmers, blower, sod cutter, jackhammer, cutting torch, carpentry equipment, automobile, shop tools, welding equipment, front end loader, ditch witch, chain saw, sprayer, edger, front end tiller, radio, computer, camera, easement machine, combined sewer cleaning truck, root cutter, gas monitor; operates any other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.


Completes and reviews various forms, reports, work orders, logs, accident reports, or other documents, and, forwards or retains as appropriate.


Maintains inventories of supplies, forms, and equipment; ensures availability of adequate supplies to complete work activities; prepares purchase requisitions for needed materials, equipment, and supplies; receives/distributes incoming supply shipments.


Communicate with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review the status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems. Works with other divisions and departments, as necessary, to update and maintain maps, review construction drawings, SCADA systems, and other necessary forms, documents, and electronic devices/tools.


Operates a City vehicle; conducts pre-and post-trip inspections, including checking all fluids, gauges, lighting, mirrors, tires, body damage, seats, and seatbelts, cleanliness of the vehicle, etc.; loads and unloads materials, supplies, and equipment as needed to complete assigned projects; reports all problems or necessary repairs to appropriate personnel immediately; completes and maintains inspection, gas usage and other associated documentation.


Ensures compliance with all applicable codes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures; ensures adherence to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.


ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS


Assists in hurricane preparedness; assists in clean-up after natural disasters. Assists with special projects as requested. Performs other related duties as required, requested and assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED with two (2) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of related facilities as specified below. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.


Crew Supervisor assigned to Construction or Leak Crew requires the possession and maintenance of a Water or Sewer Class D Operators license and a valid Commercial Driver's License Class A (CDL-A), with appropriate endorsements and two (2) years of heavy equipment operating experience. Ability to obtain a Water or Sewer Class C Operators license within two (2) years.


Crew Supervisor assigned to Pump Station Maintenance requires the possession and maintenance of a Water or Sewer Class D Operators license and two (2) years of pump station operational experience. Ability to obtain a Water or Sewer Class C Operators license within two (2) years.


Crew Supervisor assigned to Streets requires a valid Commercial Driver's License Class B (CDL-B) with appropriate endorsement and two (2) years roadway maintenance, repair, and equipment operation experience.


Crew Supervisor assigned to Stormwater requires a Certified Erosion Prevention and Sedimentation Control Inspector (CEPSCI) certification and a valid Commercial Driver's License Class B (CDL-B) with appropriate endorsement and two (2) years of underground utility system inspection/maintenance experience.


Crew Supervisor assigned to Vactor and CCTV requires the possession and maintenance of a Water or Sewer Class D Operators license and a valid Commercial Driver's License Class B (CDL-B) with Tanker endorsement and two (2) years of underground utility system inspection/maintenance experience. Ability to obtain a Water or Sewer Class C Operators license within two (2) years.


Crew Supervisor assigned to Water or Meter Maintenance requires the possession and maintenance of a Water or Sewer Class D Operators license and two (2) years of meter maintenance or underground utility system inspection/maintenance experience. Ability to obtain a Water or Sewer Class C Operators license within two (2) years.


Physical Ability: Tasks require the regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that generally involves lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds, depth, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, or toxic agents.
