PURPOSE:

Routine Testers are responsible for conducting "routine" laboratory tests on intermediate and finished liquid hydrocarbon products directly and indirectly produced by crude oil and biofeedstock refining operations. Routine testers will be expected to gain an understanding and become proficient at using many types of lab testing equipment and procedures. This includes, but is not limited to, PC software controlled devices, "stand alone" equipment, and some "manually" conducted tests. All test results will be entered into a computer database. This position requires a strict adherence to safety procedures, good observation skills, and the ability to communicate both written and orally. Routine Testers will be required to wear the proper personal protective equipment and are required to be walking/standing while conducting tests for 8 - 12 hours a day. Entry level positions require working 12 hour "night shifts", 7 days in a row, followed by 7 days off and then repeating that schedule for 12 hour "day shifts". Routine Testers report directly to the Lab Lead, Senior Chemist, and Quality Control manager.

KEY OBJECTIVES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain knowledge of all required testing procedures and product specifications.
  • Operate assigned instruments and cross train on all other instruments as directed in a safe and efficient manner in order to maximize the productivity of the department.
  • Safe, timely, and accurate completion of all testing while adhering to all safety rules and regulations.
  • Wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) while working in the laboratory.
  • Ensure data integrity and cleanliness of laboratory.
  • Employ problem solving and observation skills in determining the correct solution to challenges the laboratory or company may face.
  • Have the ability to receive instructions from shift supervisors or other management personnel on weekends and after regular work hours in the absence of the lab managers.
  • Report data to Lab & Stock Managers, Operations Department, Engineering Department, and assisting in the overall function of the refinery.
  • Participate in housekeeping audits and Safety Audits.
  • Assist with receipt of inspection of lab supplies and maintenance of supply inventory.
  • Work as a viable team member supporting all other employees to the best of your abilities on order to eliminate barriers between departments and functions.
  • Additional duties as assigned

REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCES:

  • High school diploma or High School Equivalent required.
  • Successful completion of a General Chemistry I college course required.
  • Need to have a high ability to multitask efficiently and in a timely manner.
  • Must be able to work nights, weekends, and holidays in accordance with the agreed upon union contract and schedule.
  • Position requires ability to conduct tests over a 12-hour shift and be on your feet a majority of your shift.
  • After training period, must pass the proper training requirements test for Routine Tester and/or any expected position in an allotted amount of time.

COMPETENCIES:

  • Strong desktop computer and software application skills.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
