This position in the Operations Services Department at Diablo Canyon Power Plant (DCPP) is responsible for performing the field activities related to operating the equipment that generates electricity at the plant.

Position Summary

We have multiple openings for nuclear operators. This is an IBEW Local 1245 represented classification, which has over 100 years of experience representing employees at PG&E.

If you move forward in the process, you will have to come to the San Luis Obispo area up to three separate occasions at your own expenses to complete testing, interview, and take a physical exam before you start. We do not reimburse your expenses, and we do not pay for relocation. Passing the IST and POSS exams mentioned in the Minimum Qualifications section does not guarantee an interview.

10/21/2024 Start Date

During the first 10 months, you will be participating in a learning environment that is both classroom and hands on which will include regular business as well as rotating shifts. The classroom setting includes lectures, quizzes, and exams.

After you pass the final exam and graduate from nuclear operator class, you will be assigned to a rotating crew. Every 5 weeks, your shifts will consist of rotating 12 hours days to 12 hour nights on a weekly basis which includes one week of 10-hour days for requalification training.

The nuclear operator position is an excellent entry level opportunity for hands-on experience in a nuclear operating environment. You will operate and monitor the turbine generator and reactor support systems.

To obtain and maintain employment and unescorted access at DCPP, you must be able to pass a drug and alcohol screen, a security background check, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission physical fitness examination, psychological screen, computer-based training, and be subject to random drug and alcohol screening.

You will be expected to pass a respirator fit test and be SCBA certified within the first six months of employment.

The actual hourly rate paid to anindividualwill be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses orcertifications,experience, market value, geographic location, collective bargaining agreement, and internalequity.Although we estimatethe successful candidate hiredinto this role will be placed towards the middle or entry pointof the range, the decisionwill be made on a case-by-casebasis related to these factors.

Under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement, the starting hourly rate range for this position is $49.98 to $70.04,subject to collectively bargained wage increases.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and operate turbines and auxiliary power plant equipment.
  • Monitor all systems for normal running conditions, performing activities such as checking gauges to assess output or assess the effects on other equipment.
  • Respond to system or unit abnormalities, diagnosing the cause, and recommending or taking corrective action.
  • Record operating data such as the results of surveillance tests.
  • Note malfunctions of equipment, instruments, or controls, and report these conditions to supervisors.
  • Implement operational procedures that control or manipulate plant equipment
  • Participate in nuclear fuel handling activities such as preparation, transfer, loading, and unloading.
  • Conduct inspections and operations outside of control rooms as necessary.

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED
  • Must possess a valid California Driver's license or ability to obtain by first day of employment
  • Must be able to wear company provided respirator
  • Ability to work around energized, high voltage and large mechanical rotating equipment and within and around a nuclear environment
  • Ability to climb while wearing fall protection and lift/carry heavy tools/materials over narrow slippery surfaces, up and down stairways and ladders
  • Ability to work in awkward positions, in confined spaces (very small areas), in elevated areas (working from heights), performing work tasks from ladders, scaffolds, metal gratings or in fall protection situations as well as indoors, outdoors, and in hot environments
  • Ability to work overtime on weekdays, weekends, nights, and holidays and work swing and night shifts

Desired:

  • Associate degree or equivalent in engineering or other technical areas
  • Experience as an operator at an industrial or power plant

  • Demonstrated experience working with electrical, electronic, or mechanical systems
