Market Development Department

The Market Development (MD) team is responsible for 5 key functions within our NA business: 1) Market Strategy 2) Site Selection & Acquisition 3) New Site Development, 4) Utility Infrastructure, and 5) Revenue Operations. The team drives the business plans and execution of our geographic and vertical market expansions across North America. We are at the front-end of the process of ensuring we have the critical capacity required to meet the evolving requirements of our wholesale and hyperscale customer base. We evaluate supply, demand, pricing, network, power, and a myriad of other factors when developing our market and site plans. We then acquire sites that align with those plans, lead the development of the overall campus site planning, and progress them through entitlement and permitting such that they are in a shovel ready state for construction. The team collaborates with Sales, Solution Engineering, Design Engineering, Construction, Operations, Finance, and Senior Management along the way. In addition to pre-construction development work, we also help ensure optimal revenue realization post-construction through development of commercial constructs and pricing that aligns to the objectives of both Vantage and our customers. One thing that distinguishes Vantage is that our staff are given the responsibility and authority to directly drive tangible results.

Position Overview

Vantage seeks an experienced polished Utility Business Development Power Contracting Manager to develop, foster, and own relationships and contracting with both new and existing power utility providers in the New Site Development group. The role will own all power contracting across our an assigned territory of the North American portfolio, including optimizing rate structures, leading negotiations, pursuing business development, and managing ongoing engagement with utilities. The right candidate will successfully manage utility spend across our growing footprint; report regularly to Vantage leadership; build new relationships and foster existing partnerships; and manage key project and engagement risks while coordinating with cross-functional teams across the Vantage platform.

Constant coordination with Market Development, Power Planning, New Site Development, Design, Construction, Operations, Sales, Solutions Engineering, Marketing, subject matter experts and the wider Executive Team (specifically with regards to strategic elements) will be required to keep pace with Vantage's strategic land acquisition and leasing goals, including enhancing Vantage's product and service offering wherever possible. Collaboration and integration in the sales lifecycle process as well as existing operational sites, including client interface alongside Solutions Engineering, are all integral to the role as well.

Essential Job Functions

  • Own all power contracting across the assigned territory of the North American footprint

  • Evaluate new markets and develop relationships with new and existing utilities

  • Evaluate and optimize rate structures and tariffs in coordination with Public Policy

  • Define, and map, and update the power contracting process for all providers, undertaking business development and research in new territories

Duties

  • Coordinate with the Power Planning team as capacity planning models dictate changes to contracts and rate structures

  • Partner with Sustainability to meet Vantage's Sustainability Goals

  • In coordination with Power Planning, develop and execute on our Power Banking strategy

  • Develop familiarity with rate structures and related risks in each relevant geography and maintain models for expected power rate structures, in coordination with Public Policy & Sales teams as required

  • Support site evaluation with the Market Strategy, Site Selection, and New Site Development teams

  • Monitor and optimize power spend across our portfolio, in coordination with Operations & Billing

  • Coordinate with the Billing and Operations teams as changes in customer usage dictate changes to contracts and utility engagements

  • Lead the process to obtain and secure utility power connection agreements, including procurement of renewable energy options where feasible

  • Maintain reporting of power agreements and status for all North American Development projects

Skills, Knowledge, and Experience

  • Solid understanding of utility contracting, rate structures, as well as knowledge of energy use of organizations, with a recognized degree or equivalent (background in business preferred)

  • Experience negotiating utility connection agreements required

  • Renewable PPA negotiation, carbon markets, natural gas, and/or energy markets experience preferred

  • Experience working with data centers or other similar large loads preferred

  • Seniority Level - Mid-level with minimum 5 years' experience in power contracting or utility business development; 8+ years preferred

  • Working proficiency or fluency in French not required, but strongly preferred

  • Strong IT skills: Ability to use IT multiple communication tools and packages essential

  • Flexible, adaptable, and self-directed; able to work in a variety of circumstances, e.g.: remotely, while travelling, across multiple time zones, cross functionally, by project, etc.

  • Regular domestic and Canada travel likely required in 2023 (25-50%+)

Additional Details

  • Salary Range: $135,000 - $150,000 Base + Bonus (this range is based on Colorado and California market data and may vary in other locations)

  • Compensation for the role will depend on a number of factors, including your qualifications, skills, competencies, and experience and may fall outside of the range shown.
