Senior Construction Materials Engineering Technician

S&ME is seeking an individual to join our Construction Services team in Columbus, Ohio as a Senior Construction Materials Engineering Technician and help us provide engineering solutions to our clients.


What You Will Do:

As a Senior Construction Materials Engineering Technician, you'll play a vital role in ensuring construction projects adhere to industry standards and specifications. Your responsibilities encompass a range of tasks from reviewing plans to conducting special inspections, all aimed at guaranteeing the quality and integrity of infrastructure projects. Communication, leadership, and technical proficiency are key as you coordinate with various stakeholders and mentor junior staff. Despite the challenges of outdoor work and project variations, the satisfaction of contributing to successful constructions makes this role both rewarding and impactful.

  • Review plans and specifications for construction site observations.
  • Document field activities, observations, and testing results.
  • Utilize management systems like Metafield for data management.
  • Conduct equipment calibration according to industry standards.
  • Perform special inspections in compliance with the International Building Code (IBC)

Who You Are:

  • You have a High School diploma/GED
  • You have a minimum of 5 years of experience in construction testing/inspections of soil, concrete, masonry, and/or asphalt materials
  • You have two or more active certification(s):
    • American Concrete Institute (ACI): Field Testing Grade I; Strength Testing Technician; Laboratory Technician
    • NICET: Construction Materials Testing (Asphalt, Concrete, Soils)
    • International Code Council (ICC): Special Inspector (Reinforced Concrete, Masonry, Soils)
    • DOT Certifications in the fields of Aggregate, Density, Asphalt, and Concrete

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

You are willing and able to perform the physical demands of this position with the use of Company-provided Personal Protective Equipment such as:

  • Working outdoors the majority of the time in varying weather conditions
  • Walking over rough and uneven terrain
  • Standing up to 8 hours a day, up to 12 hours on occasion
  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs, (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
  • Maneuver field equipment safely, such as a loaded wheelbarrow, on uneven ground and around active construction sites
  • Traveling out-of-town (typically overnight) for assignments as necessary
  • Working outside of normal business hours when necessary
