SUMMARY STATEMENT:

The Carpenter maintains buildings and related structures and elements in good working order and condition; inspect and determine need for carpentry repairs or alterations; and support the department in its operation and upkeep of the facility. The Carpenter will assist in the general maintenance duties of the department as directed and as the schedule allows. Applies carpentry techniques and using carpentry tools to construct, alter, repair and/or install walls, stairs, floors, ceilings, windows, doors, etc.; inspect buildings to determine need for carpentry repairs or alterations; interpret and/or draw sketches or layouts of work to be done; erect and dismantle staging and scaffolding; operate lifts and perform related work as required. The Carpenter will assist in the general maintenance duties of the department as directed and as the schedule allows.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Repair, replace, and modify building elements including but not limited to items such as doors, door locks and hardware, cabinetry, shelving, walls, stairs, ramps, floors; modify and assemble cubicle partitions, and furniture
  • Inspects building for carpentry repair or alteration needs. Estimates job duration and the cost and/or quantities of labor and materials needed to complete the job and reports results of inspection to management
  • Interprets and/or draws up sketches, patterns, blueprints, instructions and/or layouts of work to be done
  • Performs structural repair, alteration or improvement work such as modifications to ceiling systems; prepares surfaces for paint or cement work; studding, plastering walls and cracks in floors or around windows; taping joints on sheetrock; and cementing and/or replacing counter tops
  • Performs related work such as framing pictures; making window screens; crafting signs; ordering materials; sharpening and tempering various tools and equipment
  • Confers with museum staff, various department heads or supervisors regarding handling of emergencies, works with Facilities Management for project scheduling
  • Operate lifts and install staging as required for the safe access of related work
  • Responsible for responding to emergency incidents/situations on the property that may be a threat to the safety of staff, guests, and property. Emergency incidents include but are not limited to bomb threats, fire alarms, natural disasters, power or equipment failure, building evacuations, spill response, pandemic response and other crisis' as defined in the Museum's Emergency Preparedness and Management Plan (EPAMP).


WORK SCHEDULE:

This position is full-time, 40 hours/week, Monday - Friday


REPORTS TO:

Manager, Facilities


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 4 or more years of carpentry, building and/or construction trade experience.
  • Skill in using handheld power tools such as saws, drills, pneumatic nailers, etc.
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of small handheld tools such as hammers, saws, screwdrivers, chisels, drills, etc., and expertise in their use
  • Comfort working outdoors and in various weather conditions
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to draw and/or interpret sketches
  • Working knowledge in the use of or the ability to learn Electronic Work Order Systems
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time


STARTING SALARY:

Non-Exempt (Hourly). $27.00-32.00 per hour
