We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Corporate Controller to join our team at CIS to shape the future of our high-growth startup with a portfolio of both infrastructure development and management programs, and climate advisory services that is slated to do nearly $90 Million (total revenues) in business in 2024. As the Controller, you will play a pivotal role in overseeing the accounting operations and assist with the financial planning of our company, ensuring compliance with regulations and driving financial performance. Until a full-time Chief Financial Officer is hired, you will report to our Chief Executive Officer. Internally, you will work closely with our market directors, financial planning & analysis team, human resources staff. Externally, you will work with our broader support companies, including KPMG, CliftonLarsonAllen and lenders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Financial Management: Managing the company's financial activities, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting. This involves overseeing the preparation of financial statements, such as income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements.
  • Accounting Operations: Supervising the accounting department to ensure accurate and timely recording of financial transactions. This includes maintaining general ledger accounts, accounts payable and receivable, payroll processing, and expense management.
  • Compliance and Regulations: Ensuring compliance with accounting standards, tax regulations, and other financial reporting requirements. This involves staying up-to-date with changes in financial regulations and implementing necessary adjustments to ensure compliance.
  • Financial Analysis: Conducting financial analysis to provide insights into the company's performance and financial health. This may involve analyzing key performance indicators (KPIs), variance analysis, profitability analysis, and trend analysis to support decision-making by management.
  • Internal Controls: Establishing and maintaining internal controls to safeguard company assets and prevent fraud or financial mismanagement. This includes developing and enforcing accounting policies and procedures, as well as implementing checks and balances to mitigate risks.
  • Financial Systems: Lead the selection, implementation, and operation of accounting and financial software systems.
  • Strategic Planning: Collaborating with executive management to develop long-term financial strategies and objectives for the company. This may involve financial planning, forecasting, and scenario analysis to support strategic decision-making and business growth initiatives.
  • Audit Management: Coordinating external audits and reviews by independent auditors to ensure compliance with auditing standards and regulations. This involves preparing audit schedules, responding to auditor inquiries, and addressing any audit findings or recommendations.
  • Cash Management: Managing the company's cash flow to optimize liquidity and working capital. This includes monitoring cash balances, cash flow forecasting, and managing banking relationships to ensure adequate funding for ongoing operations and capital investments.

What You Will Need:

  • A past role as a controller for a company with at least $20 Million in revenue.
  • Enthusiasm to work within a collaborative, interdisciplinary team comprised of progressive urban greening experts to make positive and impactful change across communities through careful implementation of climate-resilient, green best practices.
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and equity and contributing to an inclusive workplace environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field is required. Master's Degree is preferred.
  • At least ten years of experience as a Controller in a construction services company or a real estate developer. Past experience with spin-outs and/or start-ups is a strong plus.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) designation preferred.
  • Past experience in an infrastructure development or a commercial real estate company is a plus.
  • Past experience leading organizations with external investors or debt facilities is a plus.
  • Discretion and confidentiality when handling sensitive information.
  • Exceptional management and supervisory skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to interact professionally with people at all levels.
  • Professional demeanor, with the ability to represent the organization in a positive and professional manner.
  • Ability to anticipate needs, exercise sound judgment, and make decisions independently.
  • Ability to travel as needed.
  • A valid driver's license is required.

Position Location Requirements

Although our preference is to hire in the Ann Arbor or Washington DC metropolitan areas, we will consider strong candidates that are remote.

If near an office, the candidate is expected to work in an office setting a few days a week, attend in-person meetings as required, and should anticipate approximately 10% travel time throughout the year.

The pay range for this position is $125k to $150k. Base pay offered may vary depending on skills, experience, job-related knowledge, and location. This position is also eligible for a discretionary performance incentive.
