Job Description

We are looking for a mechanical engineer with a hands-on background to join the engineering team that design, supports, and improves this complex machinery. The position will require a solid grasp of foundational engineering principles to tackle problems that span a range of engineering disciplines. The engineer will be given large independence and freedom to solve the problems they are assigned. However, to find the most practical solution to these issues, they will need to collaborate with other stakeholders and thoroughly investigate the issues.

A results driven engineer will be rewarded by seeing their work turned into a reality by our internal tool room that has built the machines in operation a short distance from their office door.

Responsibilities and Duties:

Daily responsibilities of the engineer will be focused on engineering activities to support highly specialized and fully custom manufacturing machinery for producing an assortment of electrical connectors by material removal. This will include designing parts and improvements, troubleshooting production issues, maintaining the systems that keep these machines running, and the various tasks that are required to support the department. The engineer will report directly to the engineering manager.

The engineer:

1. Must be capable of turning a given set of objectives into a clear set of goals and developing a project path to achieve the desired results. They will be given a high degree of independence in pursing those objectives, but must collaborate with stakeholders to ensure that the outcome is a practical one for a shop production environment.

2. Must be adept at designing in a digital environment and thoroughly documenting their work in a manner that will allow others to maintain or improve upon the progress he or she has made. Where systems are not yet in place, they will need the ability to create thought-out organizational systems and train others in using those systems.

3. Will be responsible for creating process improvements and maintaining those processes.

4. Will be cross-trained in a variety of engineering functions and some shop functions so that they gain the experience necessary to develop and improve upon the groundwork that has been developed. This may include developing tooling, setting specifications for components and ordering them, learning to operate our machines, processing product design changes through ECO’s, and many other tasks.

1. Will be involved in investigation of non-conforming Material and other production issues and report their results in compliance with ISO. When troubleshooting, they must be willing to go to the source of the issue and do hands-on work to find the root cause.

2. Must verify the results of projects in accordance with engineering principles and good scientific practices.

Required Qualifications and Skills:

1. B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or very closely related discipline.

2. 2-5 years of engineering experience. Approximately ½ of those years or more should be in an industrial manufacturing setting.

3. Must be detail oriented, highly organized and disciplined, and possess good time management skills.

4. Strong communication skills and the ability to work with shop personnel and coordinate projects across multiple departments.

5. Demonstrated hands-on mechanical skills and ability.

6. Highly competent with computers including:

a. Solid modeling tools such as Autodesk inventor (preferred), Solid Works, and Pro E., and

b. Standard office software (Excel, Word, etc.) and the ability to type 30 WPM,

c. Appropriate skills to manage digital engineering assets.

7. Strong troubleshooting skills.

8. Able to understand hydraulic and control schematics. The ability to create and modify them is a plus.
