Service Worker - Seasonal

Position Summary:

The City of Independence has several openings for Seasonal Service Department workers to assist the Service Department in landscaping, grounds keeping and related duties for City projects. Duties include general labor, cleaning, cutting grass, sweeping, raking, shoveling, planting flowers, spreading mulch, weed eating, washing trucks and related tasks. The ideal candidate will be comfortable operating maintenance equipment such as lawn mowers, trimmers, and blowers. Must be 18 years or older with a valid driver's license.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Operate push or riding lawnmowers; may operate heavier tractor and other equipment if needed
• Remove weeds; prune and remove overgrown limbs, debris, overgrowth, other hazards
• Oversee maintenance repairs to equipment, landscape structures, and hardscape walkways
• Assist road maintenance crews with asphalt, concrete and crack sealing work
• Litter patrol
• Painting, general labor duties as needed
• Duties may also include road maintenance work with asphalt, concrete and crack sealing, litter removal, and painting.

Requirements and Qualifications

• Previous experience in landscaping, maintenance, road work, construction or groundskeeping is preferred but not required
• Candidates can expect to work outdoors in a mix of weather conditions.
• Able to work independently as well as part of a crew
• Must be able to operate equipment such as lawnmowers, leaf blowers, hedge trimmers, etc.
• Able to physically stand, bend, squat, and lift up to 50 pounds
• Driving and equipment operation experience, valid CDL a plus
  • starting salary of $12-$16/hour will be commensurate with experience

Physical Demands:

• The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to bend, stoop, walk, climb stairs or ladders and push or lift light weight (5-10 pounds). Sometimes frequently work in awkward or confined positions and lift or push moderate weight (15-20 pounds). Occasional lifting or pushing of heavy weight (50+ pounds).
