TITLE: Non-Medical Vehicle Operator / Driver

DEPARTMENT Operations

EXEMPTION STATUS: Non-Exempt

SUPERVISED BY: Operations Manager

SUMMARY: To safely respond to and transport ambulatory, wheelchair and stretcher-bound patients in a timely, courteous and professional manager.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE:

  • Safely operate the vehicle.
  • Safely operate the wheelchair lift device, stretcher and assist ambulatory patients.
  • Properly secure the patient and belongings in the vehicle for transport.
  • May be required to assist a patient from a chair or bed to a wheelchair.
  • Must be able to lift a wheelchair or patient belongings as necessary
  • Recognize patient conditions that are not appropriate for transport in a non-medical transport unit.
  • Operate and communicate on the radio system.
  • Fuel and clean the vehicle as necessary, at least once per shift.
  • Assure proper delivery of patient and belongings to receiving facility/person/residence.
  • Respond to all assigned calls in an appropriate, safe and efficient manner.
  • Efficiently utilize supplies and equipment according to departmental guidelines; to include properly logging in and out equipment, cleaning and restocking units, reporting possible abuse or damage of equipment to the Field Operations Supervisor.
  • Maintain a thorough working knowledge of local geography and the ability to read map, street, and grid books.
  • Ensure the unit and equipment are consistently maintained in a clean, organized and ready condition after each response. Shall ensure proper fuel, fluid and tire pressure levels at all times. Report vehicle equipment damage or malfunctions as outlined in the operations standard operating procedures.
  • Complete all station duties and maintain crew quarters in neat and serviceable conditions.
  • Perform all of the above functions in accordance with established financial and operational plans and goals pertaining to cost effectiveness and efficient management.
  • Prompt and regular attendance at work.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 19 Years of Age or older
  • Valid State of Georgia Drivers License
  • Completion of company driving course
  • Ability to pass post-offer testing including: appropriate agility test, physical and drug test

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

  • Employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
  • Employee frequently is required to stand and walk.
  • Employee is required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, or crouch for extended periods.
  • Employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 150 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 300 pounds with assistance from others.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Employee must be able to transfer a patient in a stair chair between floors while ascending or descending stairs with assistance of a partner.
  • Employee must be able to transfer a patient on a stretcher from ground to ambulance.
  • Employee must be able to push/pull stretcher release handle.
  • Employee must be able to grip undercarriage release handle on stretcher requiring bilateral coupling forces up to 35lbs to raise and lower the stretcher.
  • Employee must ascend and descend stairs often multiple levels/stories.
  • Employee must be able to climb into out of the unit multiple times.
  • Employee must be able to tolerate heights up to 68”.
  • Employee must be able to tolerate various temperatures and weather conditions.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  • Due to the nature of EMS working conditions employee may be exposed to inclement weather, potential hazardous conditions, diseases and other illnesses. Frequent interruptions, work pressure and irregularities in work schedule are expected. Employee is continuously faced with a number of projects considered to be high priority. Employee is subject to continually changing deadlines. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to travel and attend both regular and unscheduled meetings, some of which take place outside of regular working hours.
