The American Lung Association has an excellent opportunity for a Health Promotions Intern who will be home-based in the Palm Desert area of CA. Alongside members of the Health Promotion & Education team, you will join an outstanding group of professionals dedicated to our mission: to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease through research, education, and advocacy.

This intern will assist the American Lung Association Inland Empire staff to execute health promotion and tobacco prevention activities to gain experience in the field of outreach, education, evaluation, health policy, and community organizing in the context of tobacco prevention. The intern will support initiatives focused on smokefree outdoor public spaces, smokefree multi-unit housing, and the tobacco retail environment. In collaboration with the project team, the intern will attend community events, assist in data collection, and participate in community workgroup meetings.

This is a paid internship position requiring a minimum time commitment of 10-15 hours per week (flexible schedule). This position is for the Spring 2024 semester and is expected to be completed by May 31, 2024.

PROJECTS

This is a great opportunity for the intern to enhance their skills in organization, multi-tasking and communications. The intern can expect to develop confidence and marketable skills by engaging in or assisting with many of the following activities:

Gain a basic understanding of the American Lung Association

  • Become knowledgeable of mission, development, and communications efforts.
  • Gain technical training by utilizing Microsoft Office suite Applications, including Microsoft Teams
  • Participate in staff meetings and learning opportunities.

Communications

  • Assist in the development of media materials such as press releases, facts sheets and briefing documents.
  • Assist in compiling media lists, media calendars and communications plans.
  • Assist with brainstorming and providing creative ideas to execute communications efforts for events, programs and advocacy efforts

Advocacy & Health Promotion

  • Research and summarize public health facts and figures.
  • Identify, schedule and conduct outreach events and tabling opportunities.
  • Develop and conduct presentations on smoke-free initiatives and other tobacco related topics to various groups.
  • Assemble health education materials for presentations and tabling events.
  • Identify and recruit community members to participate in project activities.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  • Learn more about Non-Profit structure, including mission, development, and communications efforts.
  • Gain technical training by utilizing Microsoft Office Suite applications, including Microsoft Teams.
  • Learn about team building and collaborating with staff.
  • Learn how to develop communications for health education, outreach, and policy platforms.
  • Learn how to recruit, mobilize, and engage communities in health advocacy.
  • Gain experience in health education outreach.
  • Learn to cultivate relationships.
  • Learn how to communicate in a professional office setting.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be working towards a degree in Health Sciences, Non-Profit Management, or a related field.
  • Must be currently enrolled at UC Riverside: Palm Desert, CSU San Bernardino: Palm Desert, College of the Desert, California Indian Nations College, or Mayfield College.
  • Qualified candidates must be enthusiastic, reliable, and interested in developing a career in health sciences, advocacy, or non-profit management.
  • Qualified candidates should possess strong writing skills, attention to detail, and have a keen interest in the mission of the American Lung Association.
  • Ability to multitask, perform in a team environment, and a demonstrated willingness to learn.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Reliable transportation.
  • Computer Proficiency – Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher.
  • Ability to lift and carry 25 lbs. (supplies).
