Job Title: Septic Truck Operator


Classification: Hourly (non-exempt)


Reports To: General Manager


Date of Revision: January 2, 2024


Supervisory Responsibilities: Occasionally supervise, direct, and teach the apprentice/helper on job sites


Duties/Responsibilities:


  • Provide cost estimates.
  • Communicate with supervisors and other workers, using equipment such as wireless phones, email, or text message.
  • Drive trucks to transport crews, materials, and equipment.
  • Inspect manholes to locate sewer line stoppages.
  • Operate sewer cleaning equipment, high-velocity water jets, sewer flushers, bucket machines, and vac-alls.
  • Prepare and keep records of actions taken, including maintenance and repair work.
  • Clean and repair septic tanks, sewer lines, or relates structures such as manholes, culverts, and catch basins.
  • Measure excavation sites, tapelines, or lengths of cutting heads within sewers, and mark areas for digging.
  • Service, adjust, and make minor repairs to equipment, machines, and attachments.
  • Locate problems, using specially designed equipment, and mark where digging must occur to reach damaged tanks or pipes.
  • Dig out sewer lines manually, using shovels.
  • Decontaminate equipment or sites to remove hazardous or toxic substances.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


  • Customer Service – Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer services.
  • Transportation – Ability to drive and operate a septic truck, which requires a CDL license.
  • Public Health and Safety – Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property and institutions.
  • Equipment Maintenance – Performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
  • Equipment Selection – Determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.
  • Repairing – Repairing machines or systems using the needed tools.
  • Troubleshooting – Determining causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it.
  • Active Learning and Listening – Understanding the implications of new information for both current and future problem-solving and decision-making. Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.

Required Education and Experience:


  • CDL License required.
  • 1 or more years septic experience required.



Additional Eligibility Qualifications:

Compensation:


$60,000 to $180,000 per year

Physical Activity:


Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, and hearing.


Physical Requirements:


Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.


Visual Acuity Requirements:


Employees in this position are required to have visual acuity to perform an activity such as: operates machines, such as lathes, drill presses, power saws, and mills where the seeing job is at or within arm’s reach; performs mechanical or skilled trades tasks of a non-repetitive nature, such as carpenter, technicians, service people, plumbers, painters, mechanics, etc.


Working Conditions:


  • Subject to environmental conditions. Activities occur inside and outside.
  • Subject to noise. There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above ambient noise level.
  • Subject to hazards. Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals.
  • Frequently in close quarters, crawl spaces, shafts, man holes, small enclosed rooms, small sewage and line pipes, and other areas that could cause claustrophobia.
  • Required to function in narrow aisles or passageways.


Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:


  • Full time. Daily schedules begin at 8am and end at 5pm, but evening and weekend hours are to be expected occasionally. Overtime is common.
  • All Septic Truck Operators are in an on-call rotation for evenings and weekends (typically every 3rd week).


Travel:


Due to the nature of the industry and this position, daily local travel is required.


Overnight travel is not to be expected.

1-49 miles: 90%

50-100 miles: 10%

100 miles or more: 0%
