​Job Description: 

  • POSITION SUMMARY
    • Delivers perioperative care, under the supervision of a surgeon and Registered Nurse to facilitate the safe and effective performance of invasive surgical procedures; ensures that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. The surgical technologist handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. 
  • KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Secures supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure in an organized and timely manner.
    • Follows steps for scrubbing, gowning and gloving according to department policies and procedures.
    • Creates and maintains a neat, organized sterile field.
    • Performs needle, sponge and instrument counts with the circulatory nurse according to department policies and procedures.
    • Anticipates the needs of surgeons, passes instruments and provides sterile items in an efficient manner.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of supplies, instrumentation, equipment and suture material required for various surgical procedures.
    • Follows proper technique for checking medication on the sterile field with the circulating nurse and transferring the medication to the surgeon for administration during the procedure.
    • Demonstrates ability to assist the surgeon with draping of the sterile field.
    • Prepares instruments for terminal cleaning; wraps and processes instrumentation according to proper procedure.
    • Responsible for the maintenance and inventory of all supplies and equipment within designated area of specialty.
    • Assists with room turnover between cases in an efficient manner.
    • Collaborates with physician and preference card committee to make updates and ensure accuracy of preference cards.
    • Processes specimens accurately according to established procedure.
    • Ensures a professional, respectful and effective patient care and working environment through consistent use of appropriate interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Keeps clinical nurse manager and/or director as appropriate informed of all issues.
    • Acts as a role model to all staff.
    • Acts as a preceptor to new staff.
    • Provides at least 2 in-service training sessions to staff in conjunction with the perioperative educator.
  • REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
    • Expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique.
    • Knowledge of human anatomy, instrumentation, surgical procedures, and technologies to assist a physician during invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
    • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and respond appropriately to unexpected situations.
    • Familiarity with continuous quality improvement strategies. Ability to demonstrate courtesy, compassion and respect in relating to patients, families, visitors, physicians and co-workers.
    • Ability to communicate effectively and establish a cooperative, collaborative working environment.
  • EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSURE
    • Education: High School diploma required. Graduate or student of a formal Surgical Technician program or education/training in the military.
    • Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience in a Hospital Operating Room or ASC preferred
    • Certification/Licensure: Surgical Technician certification required. BLS certification required.  Medical Technician Certification from the State of New Hampshire required unless other current NH state license is held.
