Surgicare Center, our outpatient satellite surgery center, consistently garners high patient satisfaction ratings for its patient-friendly approach and convenience, especially for people with restricted mobility. Located on the Convenient Care Campus on Warren Road in Ithaca, Surgicare makes it easier for many people in Tompkins County and the region to have routine outpatient surgery closer to where they live and work.


Position Summary: Registered Nurses at Cayuga Medical Center are an integral part of the collaborative interdisciplinary team devoted to the delivery of comprehensive and compassionate care to the Tompkins County community. RNs are able to practice at their full scope of practice, and have the opportunity to engage in the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of programs and services with the goal of improving patient outcomes, and execute an optimal plan of care in a shared governance environment. The Registered Nurse is responsible for the provision of direct patient care as assigned. The Registered Nurse in Prep & Recovery will care of pre and post-operative patients at Surgicare but will be cross trained for the Main Campus as well.

Department Specific: The Prep & Recovery Unit (PACU) offers the opportunity to work in a fast paced environment with an energetic and stimulating group of providers and colleagues. PACU orientation is 3-6 months, depending on previous experience, guided by PeriOp 101 through AORN, and using a didactic education model, in conjunction with hands-on learning. Skill development resources include a StimLab, Virtual Reality Headset, StimMan, and access to CNOR education, along with organization-wide resources. Cayuga Medical Center also houses a DaVinci Surgical System for robotic-assisted procedures.

Location: Cayuga Medical Center/Surgicare (Outpatient Surgery Center)


Essential Functions:

  1. Performs and documents an accurate assessment on each assigned patient within established standard of care.
  2. Identifies a patient's immediate needs on admission and establishes daily goals.
  3. Assures knowledge of Advance Directives.
  4. Reassessment of patient condition is accurately completed and documented.
  5. Responds to changes in condition quickly and appropriately.
  6. Assessment of any allergies and/or infection control techniques.
  7. Knows what procedures will be and has been performed.
  8. Reports to charge person, surgeon and anesthesia any variation patients have from established plan or change in patient condition.
  9. Individualizes plan of patient's care based on surgical procedure and utilizes guidelines in planning care.
  10. Plans and organizes self to meet patient care requirements and unit needs within shift. Stays beyond as necessary.
  11. Able to recognize priorities within patient care and act accordingly especially with pain management and documentation.
  12. Completes Phase I and/or II record at end of each case.
  13. Demonstrates accuracy in data collection with utilization of Ambulatory Surgery record and patient chart for:
    1. H&P
    2. Lab Values
  14. Confirms surgical outcome with anesthesia and any event with anesthesiologist post op.
  15. Administers optimal patient care by obtaining information regarding procedure.
  16. Ability to problem solve through any variation in the plan of care in a calm, efficient manner.
  17. Reinforce patient teaching within scope of practice.
  18. Documents flow sheets, graphic sheets, and anesthesia signature are completed by end of recovery phase and reflects patients progress toward established goals.
  19. Demonstrates complete order entry of all tests and procedures.
  20. Ability to appropriately problem solve incidents on the unit. Communicates incident information and action taken to the appropriate people.
  21. Assists on other units as the need arises to assure house-wide staff planning.
  22. Ability to appropriately report any incident and/or complaint on the unit.
  23. Maintains accountability for nursing judgement and actions.
  24. Accepts constructive feedback and follows through with suggestions and/or recommendations.
  25. Anticipates potential and actual environment safety hazards and takes appropriate actions.
  26. Demonstrates standard precautions and infection control techniques with use of appropriate signage.
  27. Maintains patient's environment.
  28. Fulfills all full-time or part-time requirements for hours worked for which hired (FT - 37.5, PT - 30.0, etc)
  29. Fulfills all weekday and weekend on call requirements - this applies to FT and PT
    1. Exception is to individuals based at Surgicare

Requirements:

  • License: Active New York Nursing license, out of state nurses are still eligible to apply
  • Minimum education: Associates Degree in Nursing
  • Experience: minimum 1 year of experience in a critical care setting
  • Certifications: ACLS, PALS (new hires have the opportunity to obtain these certifications during introductory period)
  • Physical: Repetitive use of hands and fingers (e.g., Use of computer keyboard); may require lifting and carrying light loads (up to 40 lbs), including boxes, equipment, IV solutions and stooping and kneeling (e.g., to pick up items from the floor, to remove and replace items on lower shelves and to file documents in lower file drawers); sitting, walking, or standing for long periods of time may be necessary; must be able physically to operate the equipment used for the job.
