JOB DESCRIPTION

SMALL ANIMAL SUPERVISOR


Requirements: Must have a high school diploma or equivalent; must be certified by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science as a Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT); 2 years of experience in a laboratory animal facility performing rodent and small animal husbandry, leadership experience preferred. Must have experience in areas of rodent and regulated species facilities management, breeding, barrier management, and data management. Must have a valid driver's license. Must have a working knowledge of all levels of biohazard containment. Experience working in an ABSL3 environment is a plus.


Overview: Responsible for all activities required for the proper care and maintenance of the CDC Atlanta Area Animal Care Services contract.


Description of Duties:

  1. Perform duties of the Animal Caretaker as needed to meet facility operations.
  2. Perform procedures requiring various levels of biohazard containment.
  3. Supervise and direct daily activities of husbandry personnel to ensure that all required functions are carried out appropriately, including receiving animals, feeding and watering, handling and restraint, health surveillance, equipment maintenance, supply inventories, animal manipulations, laboratory procedures, and other contract-related duties.
  4. Assist with training husbandry personnel according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  5. Schedule cage changing and assign daily activities to personnel performing husbandry procedures.
  6. Ensure that Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) are adhered to by the husbandry staff and suggest modifications to program management.
  7. Assist with reporting and caring for animal clinical cases.
  8. Participate in interviews and selection of husbandry personnel.
  9. Provide information as needed to complete contract deliverables.
  10. Perform QC duties related to meeting requirements of supported areas and as directed.
  11. Ability to work flexible hours as needed to ensure animal care is carried out in compliance with appropriate timelines to include weekend and holiday coverage.
  12. Perform animal transportation duties to include pick-up and delivery of animals, complete delivery verification logs, checking and documenting environmental parameters, vehicle sanitation, and maintenance.
  13. Work under the direct supervision of the assistant project manager.
  14. Report any abnormal conditions of the animal facility or immediate vicinity to supervisory staff.
  15. Must be able to lift 50lbs.
  16. Perform other duties as assigned.
