Position Description

RAND has an exciting opportunity for a talented Manager, Art & Design to join our in-house Design & Multimedia group, which is part of RAND's Office of External Affairs. The Design & Multimedia group creates print, digital, and multimedia products that help make RAND research and people more accessible to a broad audience through storytelling and design.

In this role, you will be a working manager and will lead a team of highly skilled print designers and graphic artists to create innovative print products such as books, summaries, articles, data visualizations, corporate collateral, and presentations. As the leader, you will ensure adherence to RAND's brand guidelines while generating trust in your expertise through accurately estimating workflow and persuasively communicating ideas and design decision rationale to clients and colleagues. As a committed mentor, you will provide guidance and motivation, evaluate team performance, identify opportunities for improvement, and manage that improvement through to realization.This position is also responsible for managing freelance help as needed. In collaboration with Director of Design & Multimedia, you will promote a unifying brand presence across print, digital, and multimedia products.

As a working leader with a proven track record, approximately half of your time will be spent doing hands-on design work creating engaging, beautiful, and accessible print products. You will develop concepts and execute on polished visual design for RAND research, which can be complex and information dense. As such, you will be expected to think holistically about a product from start to finish, consider the audience in everything you do, and stay current with best practices in design.

Qualifications

The successful candidate is required to possess the following:

  • Minimum of 6 years of experience working on print design products.

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience managing and mentoring a print design team.

  • Demonstrated expertise in design principles, typography, print standards, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Photoshop.

  • Exceptional attention to detail, organizational and communication skills.

  • Proven ability to persuasively present design solutions to internal clients to generate excitement and consensus while communicating and enforcing brand standards guidelines.

  • Ability to evaluate, manage and assign resources to projects based on required skill mix.

  • A demonstrated interest in the latest design trends and technological developments in the industry.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with digital asset management systems, like Adobe Experience Manager.

  • Experience with digital design tools, like Figma.

  • Familiarity with workflow management tools, like Jira or Workfront.

  • Familiarity with Federal Usability Standards and 508 Accessibility Compliance.

Education

BA/BS degree in design, communications, marketing, or related field is required.

Security Clearance

This position requires a U.S. security clearance. A successful candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.

Location

This position will be located at one of the following RAND offices: Arlington, Va.; Pittsburgh, Pa,; Boston, Ma; or Santa Monica, Calif. This position is eligible for RAND's hybrid work environment, which enables a blend of on-site and remote work. Some on-site presence will be required to meet business needs, including on an ad-hoc basis; onsite needs will vary from month to month.

Work Sample

This position requires applicants to submit a portfolio of work that demonstrates conceptual skills, design expertise, team leadership, and a range of modern print publication examples.

Salary Range

$100,100 - $152,400
