Virtual School Sign Language Interpreter (SLI)

Job Type: Fulltime, Spring Contract Opportunity
Pay: $32/Hour


We are seeking a highly skilled Sign Language Interpreter to join our virtual school team in Virginia. As a Virtual School Sign Language Interpreter (SLI), you will play a crucial role in facilitating communication between students who are deaf or hard of hearing and their instructors in the online learning environment. This position requires proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL), strong communication skills, and the ability to adapt to various virtual learning platforms.

Responsibilities:

  • Interpretation: Provide accurate and effective interpretation of spoken language to ASL and vice versa, ensuring clear communication between students, instructors, and other participants during virtual classes and activities.
  • Individual Support: Offer one-on-one interpreting support for students who are deaf or hard of hearing, ensuring they have equal access to educational materials, discussions, and assignments.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate closely with teachers, administrators, and other support staff to ensure inclusive learning environments and effective communication strategies for all students.
  • Preparation: Familiarize yourself with course materials, lesson plans, and other instructional resources in advance to provide seamless interpretation during virtual classes.
  • Adaptation: Adapt interpreting style and techniques to meet the diverse needs of students and accommodate various learning styles and preferences.
  • Technology Integration: Utilize virtual meeting platforms, communication tools, and assistive technology to facilitate effective communication and accessibility for students in the online learning environment.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate records of interpreting sessions, student progress, and any accommodations provided, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and guidelines.
  • Professional Development: Stay updated on best practices in sign language interpretation, accessibility standards, and virtual learning technologies through ongoing professional development and training opportunities.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Sign Language Interpreting, Deaf Education, Special Education, or a related field.
  • RID (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf) certification or equivalent preferred.
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) with a strong understanding of Deaf culture and communication needs.
  • Previous experience as a sign language interpreter in educational settings, preferably in virtual or online environments.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey complex concepts accurately and effectively.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in using virtual meeting platforms (e.g., Zoom, Microsoft Teams) and other relevant technology tools.
