Job Description
Overview 

Under the supervision of the center Education Specialist, possesses the ability and willingness to provide assistance to various areas as assigned. Primary duties will be assisting in the classroom, on the playground, and other areas around the center to ensure health, safety and promote school readiness. Secondary duties may include suppo1t to the cook, office manager, family service 
specialist, and disabilities specialist. 

Key areas of responsibility 
Classroom Environment 

1.    As trained, follows all supervision, safety, and health policies and procedures.
2.    Assists teacher to provide direct supervision and be actively engaged with children at all
times to ensure their safety and well-being. Provides clear behavioral expectations and use appropriate and positive methods to prevent and redirect misbehavior.
3.    Understands and promotes children's physical, social/emotional, cognitive, and language development using the assigned curriculum and the agency's School Readiness Plan in a
culturally appropriate way.
4.    Promotes a classroom where interactions are positive, warm, caring, and respectful of
children.
5.    Follows the lead of the children by demonstrating an awareness of and responsiveness to
children's emotional, physical and educational needs; allowing and encouraging freedom of expression and movement; and encouraging children's responsibility and autonomy.
6.    Follows teacher's lead in facilitating children's involvement in activities and managing the classroom to provide continual learning activities for the children.
7.    As trained, assists with the implementation of appropriate learning activities for special
needs children with IFSPs/IEPs.
8.    As trained, is a good language model by using correct grammar, voice level, and clear
speech.
9.    Takes primary responsibility for following classroom sanitation schedule such as cleaning off tables after meals and vacuuming (when children are not present).
10.    Once trained on Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) rules, strictly follows these rules including sanitation regulations for meal time and follows guidelines for family-style meal service.
11.    As trained, applies the principles embodied in the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS)
Other Duties
Serves as an assistant to the cook as needed to prepare and deliver food to classrooms.
2.    Answers phones, collects and files paperwork, makes copies, sends emails and performs other functions in supp01t of the office manager.
3.    Accompanies family service specialists or disability specialist to provide services to families.
4.    Fulfills other duties in support of the center as requested

Qualifications 

The minimum requirement is that the individual be 18 years of age. This is an entry level position requiring no previous education or experience. HS/GED is highly preferred. Current and former Early Head Start and Head Start parents will receive preference for employment vacancies for which they are qualified. CDA or AA in Early Childhood Education or a related field preferred. Current CPR, First Aid, and Food Handler's permit required. Must be able to work with children with special needs and children with limited or no English.

Bilingual Spanish/English preferred. Physical requirements include extended periods of walking, standing, kneeling, and crouching; the ability to lift and move 50 pounds; the ability to sit on the floor, crawl, run, and perform other actions commonly associated with caring for children age 0-5.
