Job Description

Must have a high school diploma or equivalent; must be certified by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science as a Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) or a licensed veterinary technician (LVT); and have at least 1 year of experience in a laboratory animal facility. Must have experience in such specialty areas as rodent, regulated species and non-human primate facilities management to include experience with technical procedures, imagining and surgical support, breeding, barrier management, and data management. Must have a working knowledge of biohazard containment at the ABSL2 level.


Overview: Responsible for activities required for the proper care and maintenance of client's animal care and use program in the Atlanta, GA area.


Description of Duties:

  1. Maintain the sentinel animal program.
  2. Maintain accurate and detailed records.
  3. Maintain animal health records.
  4. Perform prescribed treatments on animals.
  5. Read and understand technical requirements stated in Animal Study Protocols and discern discrepancies between technical requests and ASP's.
  6. Perform or assist investigators to perform technical procedures, these include but are not limited to immunizations, bleeding of experimental animals, harvesting tissues or organs using aseptic techniques, peritoneal lavages, cell counts, food or liquid consumption studies, and splenectomies.
  7. Perform, assist and maintain anesthesia/recovery for animals undergoing procedures such as surgery and imagining.
    1. Provide surgical room assistance and preparation.
    2. Maintain surgical room supplies and equipment.
    3. Assist with surgical procedures and monitor animals during and after procedures.
    4. Assist with training and orientation of surgical room procedures.
    5. Prepare and transport animals for imaging and monitor during imaging procedures.
  8. Restrain, handle, and manipulate various animal species.
  9. Perform husbandry and daily animal health surveillance checks and report any abnormal conditions of either the animals or the animal room environment to the appropriate person. To include exotic species housed in the ABSL3 suite.
  10. Prepare and submit required written records, charts, logs, and inventories in a timely manner.
  11. Maintain lab and surgical equipment.
  12. Perform procedures requiring various levels of biohazard containment.
  13. Perform routine animal care as needed.
  14. Report any abnormal conditions of the animal facility or immediate vicinity to supervisory staff.
  15. Must be able to lift 50lbs.
  16. Perform other duties as assigned.
