GENERAL PUPROSE OF POSITION:

Performs a variety of routine clerical and manual work in circulating and processing library materials and providing services to library patrons.

MAJOR AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY AND PERFORMANCE:

Serves as a part of the library staff team and works closely with the Director. Position requires skills in dealing with the public, skills in writing, skills in the use of computer and library equipment. Position also requires knowledge of business English grammar, operation of office machines, computers, search stations, word processors and automation system. Performs and completes all of the duties of circulation. Assists patrons in making effective use of the library, including but not limited to, location of materials and instruction in the use of on-line data bases, Internet, and other computer applications; manages the periodical collection; processes new materials; answers or refers reference questions; completes other related duties as assigned. Performs duties as assigned by the Library Director.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Duties are performed in an office type environment. Duties require extended periods of walking, standing, talking or hearing, keyboarding, lifting/carrying items, reaching with hands and arms, and using hands to finger, handle or feel. Duties require occasional periods of sitting, climbing or balancing, pulling/pushing items, and stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling. Vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Reading materials and verbal instruction require moderate interpretation. The noise level ranges from quiet to moderate. Must be able to tolerate all types of dust.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

High School diploma or GED is required. Ability to communicate and work with adults and students effectively. Must have the ability to be organized and flexible. Must type 40 words per minute. Computer experience is necessary. Strong interest in reading preferred. An ability to maintain confidentially is a priority.

EXAMPLE OF PERFORMANCE CRITERIA:

  • Meets and deals tactfully with the public effectively promoting the library and its services;
  • Establishes, maintains, and fosters positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work;
  • Checks library materials in and out;
  • Performs routine maintenance on books and other materials, reviews books, periodicals, and collections which are outdated or not used;
  • Maintains and applies knowledge of assigned library work and services and continually upgrades;
  • Attendance shows employee is punctual and works assigned shifts;
  • Checks out and re-shelves books and maintains stacks;
  • Renews and cancels library cards;
  • Assists patrons in operation of machinery in library such as copier, etc.
  • Instructs students and other in library use;
  • Helps organize special exhibits;
  • Maintains tranquil library environment;
  • Maintains accurate records of ILL requests and postage;
  • Assures all library patrons are properly registered to check out library material;
  • Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties such as answering the phone, etc.
  • Maintains confidentiality of records;
  • Conducts tours of library facilities for various education or civic groups and interested individuals;
  • Assists patrons in the selection of library materials, and provides reference guidance.
