JOB SUMMARY

We are seeking a Farm Manager to provide leadership and day-to-day management of research facilities, equipment, and land at the SePRO Research & Technology Campus in Whitakers, North Carolina.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage, maintain, and repair equipment used for research and farm operations (tractors, tillage equipment, planters, sprayers, irrigation equipment, trucks, boats)—ensure that equipment is ready for use to initiate research trials in a timely manner.
  • Serve as focal point for maintenance of research facilities and buildings (research labs in Admin Building, Field/Formulation lab, greenhouse); schedule and implement repairs and preventative maintenance as necessary.
  • Maintain field borders, grounds, and roads (mow roadsides, grass areas, ditches)
  • Manage relationship with local farmer that leases cropland at SRTC.
  • Supervise staff (full-time and seasonal) to ensure the SRTC equipment, buildings, and grounds are maintained as “show ready” to host visitors and tours.
  • Serve as liaison between SRTC team and R&D leadership; serve as the overall on-site contact for SRTC Research needs.
  • Assist Research Scientists/Associates with field, greenhouse, and lab research studies (e.g. planting, treatment application, data collection, etc.).

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Experience in executing and coordinating farm, nursery or turf operations.
  • Experience operating farm equipment (tractors, tillage equipment, planters, sprayers, irrigation equipment, etc.).
  • Knowledge of facilities and building maintenance, with a willingness to engage necessary local vendors to complete repairs and preventative maintenance.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work with a team.
  • Ability to develop farm operating budget and manage expenses accordingly.
  • Ability to work independently, schedule and prioritize tasks, and solve problems as they arise.
  • Must possess or have the ability to acquire a commercial pesticide applicator license for the State of North Carolina.
  • BS in agriculture-related field, including agronomy, horticulture, soil science, pest management, or similar fields preferred.
  • Experience with applied field/lab/greenhouse research is preferred, but not required.
  • Experience with agronomic crops, horticultural crops, and/or turf/ornamental production is preferred, but not required.
  • Willingness to work hours required for successful farm management (hours will vary by season).
