Job Title: Operator in Training
Location: Ontario, OR
Duration: 07 months
Pay Rate: $20/hr.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Possess a valid driver's license - State of Oregon
  • Working knowledge of the functions and mechanics of pumps and related equipment used in a modern wastewater plant; skill in the operation, maintenance and repair of pumps and other plant facilities; able to perform simple chemical tests; able to keep records and derive and prepare accurate reports from those records; mechanical aptitude.
  • Obtain the Wastewater Treatment Operator level 1 or Water Treatment operator 1 certification within 18 months of date of hire.

Responsibilities:
  • Operate and maintain water and wastewater treatment plants, including its treatment systems and related facilities.
  • Conduct basic laboratory tests to ensure proper treatment of water and wastewater within the treatment facilities.
  • Tasks include sampling, recording of sample data, and meter readings.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on equipment to ensure efficient, reliable operation. Perform a daily visual inspection of lagoons and treatment process.
  • Keep and maintain accurate records for reporting purposes.
  • Basic level computer skills with word processing, spreadsheet and the ability to learn the Computer Maintenance Management System.
  • Develop and maintain cooperative and respectful work relationships with co-workers and supervisor.
  • Maintain samplers, take samples, and record all data as required by the City's discharge permit.
  • Inspect equipment such as control panels, pumps, motors, valves, gauges, compressors, chlorinating and dechlorinating equipment, and analyzers for proper operation.
  • Perform routine custodial/maintenance duties to keep buildings, furnishings and treatment plant grounds and lagoon dikes in a clean and neat appearance. To assist the Operator II in maintaining the disposal area Buffer Zones, farm roads, and fences.
  • Maintain logs and records as required by the discharge permit, the plant's QAQC program, and DEQ/EPA rules and regulations regarding wastewater flow and treatment plant operation and maintenance activities. Perform computer operation as needed.
  • Follow all safety rules and procedures established for work areas.
  • Maintain proficiency by attending conferences, short schools, reviewing reports, and reading professional journals and reports and reviewing study materials.
  • As needed, operate City vehicles, and heavy equipment or provide manual labor.
  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, communicate, reach and manipulate objects, tools, or controls.
  • The position requires mobility.
  • Position duties regularly require the movement of materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Some duties are physically demanding, requiring exertion equivalent to moving materials weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Activity and types of duties performed require manual coordination and dexterity.
  • Work is performed in a wide variety of environments including laboratory, confined spaces, outside weather conditions, and may be exposed to fumes, oils, chemicals, raw sewage, etc.
  • Position performs "on-call" services after normal work hours.
