Wiley University is seeking a Chairperson/Assistant Professor of Religion. The Department Chairperson of Religion is responsible for providing academic and administrative leadership within the Department of Religion and oversees the development and implementation of curriculum, manages departmental resources, fosters a culture of research and scholarship, and promotes collaboration among faculty members. The Religion Department Chairperson reports to the Dean of the School of Business and Social Sciences and works closely with faculty, staff, students, and external stakeholders to advance the department's mission and goal

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Leads and coordinates the academic activities of the faculty and students within that discipline.
  2. Maintains and promulgates the departmental major and minor degree plans approved by the Academic Council in consultation with the faculty in the department and closely related departments.
  3. Assures that when changes to the curriculum or degree plan are warranted, the professors are working with the dean, who will, in turn, propose such changes for consideration by the Academic Council.
  4. Assists the division’s dean and the vice president for academic affairs in timely preparation (at least 20 weeks prior to each semester) of class schedules, classroom assignments, and OER selections.
  5. Models and ensures that each faculty in the department participates fully in the implementation of the student advisement, student support, and intervention programs.
  6. Fulfills the University’s mission of providing a quality education for all students attending Wiley University.
  7. Teaches and assists in developing undergraduate courses each semester in accordance with the general education and religion curriculum and degree plans.
  8. Prepares updated course syllabi and provides each student with a written statement of course requirements at the beginning of the semester, including texts, course content, competencies, and evaluation.
  9. Conducts evaluations of students’ performance and assigns grades on the basis of such evaluations.
  10. Collaborates with faculty of the division to develop collaborative, interdisciplinary and synchronized courses to improve retention of students.
  11. Keeps records of student attendance and grades in myWiley according to college policy.
  12. Develops and revises course contents, textbooks or OER, instructional materials, and teaching assignments/scheduling.
  13. Provides students with academic advisement, including developing and monitoring their degree plans and assistance in transferability as appropriate.
  14. Assists students in career counseling and qualifying students for internships, graduate studies, and similar work-related situations as needed.
  15. Serves on departmental, divisional, and institutional committees as needed to assist in policy development and other matters of benefit to the program and College.
  16. Pursues scholarly activities, including professional development and soliciting teaching and research grants.
  17. Administers and promotes the Department of Religion internally and externally to increase enrollment and retention.
  18. Assist with Men of Strength, Women of Strength, and Black History Month planning and activities.
  19. Participates in professional organizations to maintain professional skills.
  20. Maintains appropriate office hours.
  21. Participates in program effectiveness activities, including annual assessment reports and program review cycles.
  22. Supports the mission of the College and statement of vision.
  23. With the dean’s approval, may perform outside recruiting of faculty, staff, and students.
  24. Performs other duties assigned by the dean, the vice president for academic affairs, President, or designee(s) of the president.

Qualifications:

A doctorate in the teaching discipline or evidence of completion of all course work at the doctoral level; i.e., ABD with completion of dissertation within six months is required. Must have a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in the relevant teaching discipline. Three to five years of teaching or practical experience and research in the related field. Familiarity or experience with various teaching strategies is highly desirable. Experience with online instruction is also necessary. Must demonstrate active involvement in scholarly activities in addition to teaching; must be committed to teaching undergraduate and graduate students in an ethnically diverse environment and experienced in cutting-edge uses of information technology to advance learning; and assume a strong leadership role in developing courses and curricula. A background in curriculum development is desirable.
