What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking an R&D Systems Engineer to support a role within a multi-institutional leadership team responsible for the successful execution of large-scale, field-experiments. These experiments support a research program incorporating field, laboratory, and modeling studies aimed at enhancing our nation's capabilities for monitoring underground nuclear explosions anywhere in the world. This role will offer opportunities to explore the full systems engineering life-cycle and collaborate with large, multi-disciplinary, multi-institution teams, and over time, take on project leadership and project management roles.

On Any Given Day:

  • Support the technical development of scientific objectives, experiment requirements, interface documents, and verification plans.

  • Partner with domain experts throughout the DOE complex, including both scientists and engineers.

  • Work to develop, maintain, and communicate a technical baseline for the experiments.

  • Apply systems engineering principles to fit the risks and needs of this experiment.

Over time, your systems engineering work will expand to include work with cross-disciplinary teams to identify and conceptually develop new technical work within this Sandia mission program area. This may be accomplished through participation and partnerships in future proposal calls. These responsibilities will include increasing both Sandia's and your own impact and standing in these programs by producing high-quality results, and perform your work according to Sandia values.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite. This position will require up to 25% travel to support project meetings and on-site activities occurring at the Nevada National Security site.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Master's degree in systems engineering or other relevant STEM field; or equivalent education and experience (BS+4 years)

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Two years of technical work experience post master's degree.

  • You have participated (team member or lead) in integrating complex systems or experiments.

  • Systems Engineering certification.

  • Experience mapping scientific goals to technical requirements.

  • Experience performing systems engineering activities such as generating system requirements, interface definitions, and/or verification activities.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both individually and as a team member.

  • Experience with requirements management tools, such as DOORS.

  • Strong organizational, written, oral, and presentation skills.

  • Current clearance (DOE or DOD).

About Our Team:

The Geophysical Detection Technology R&D department performs geophysical monitoring research and development in support of Sandia's mission as a national security laboratory. The team's geophysics expertise addresses challenges surrounding ground-based nuclear detonation detection through next-generation algorithms exploiting multi-phenomenological data, advanced sensor technologies, and demonstration experiments.

We have a broad range of expertise in field seismology, subsurface characterization, seismo-acoustic and infrasound modeling; evaluation of seismic and infrasound sensors and systems; and the processing, analysis, and interpretation of all types of geophysical data. Technical work spans the spectrum from theoretical to applied and includes strong modeling, lab and field data collection, and analysis capabilities. The department serves as Sandia's resource for ground-based monitoring expertise, partnering with departments across the labs to integrate multiple types of data-including optical, seismic, electromagnetic, infrasound, atmospheric, radionuclide-to address broad national security needs.

Posting Duration:

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the 'posting date'. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

EEO:

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
