Position: Press Operator I

Location: Elk Grove, IL

Wage:  $26.46 Hourly

Shift: 545pm-615am, 12-hour continental schedule, 3 days one week, 4 days the following, off every other weekend *$2.00 hr. shift premium for night shift

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist Press Operators to maintain the workflow and work quality on assigned press runs.
  • Bring materials for press set-ups to press sites.
  • Clean presses on job changes.
  • Perform complex operations required to set up, operate and feed cylinder type printing press to produce a variety of items.
  • •     Operate Printing Press according to company printing procedures and guidelines.
  • Direct Press Helper according to company printing procedures.
  • Set-up jobs with assistance in the press and monitor the quality of the print as the press is running.
  • Responsible for quality and safety of set-up and safe operational procedures.
  • Communicate pertinent matters of the job with the press operator from the opposite shift at the beginning and end of the shift.
  • Check first piece conformance to specifications.
  • Perform daily and periodic preventative maintenance duties specified for assigned machines/equipment.
  • Maintain cleanliness of machines/equipment and adjacent work area.
  • Utilize satellite containers for Hazardous Waste.
  • “Hazard Waste Generator” – generates hazardous waste as part of prod

Follow equipment and workplace cleaning/sanitation procedures, to complete Sanitation Checklist

  • Follow GMP’s and PRP’s and Production SOP’s
  • Conduct and document all quality checks for intermediate product
  • Follow CCP monitoring procedure
  • Refer difficulties to group leader or supervisor for analysis and/or remedy.
  • Regular, consistent attendance and punctuality are essential to the job.
  • Report all food safety violations to management.
  • Follow all safety rules
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Participate in Sonoco’s Performance System (SPS) activities as required – 5Star, Pillar Teams, Audits, Near Misses, etc.
  • Regular, consistent attendance and punctuality are required and expected for job performance.

Skills Requirements:

  • Mechanical Aptitude,
  • Math Skills,
  • Speak, Read and Write English

Educational Requirements:

  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent job experience

Training Requirements:

  • Review Company (Corporate and Divisional) policies and procedures
  • Personal Safety
  • GMP Training
  • Food Safety and Quality Systems requirements and procedures
  • Review Food Safety and Quality System policies
  • Explanation of departments and their roles
  • Job Specific Training
  • EFI database procedures.
  • Safety operation of machine.
  • Read job jacket specifications.
  • Proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Proper running specifications. i.e., machine, equipment, inks, solvents, aniloxes.
  • Training required on Eight to Eleven Color presses.

Process Printing:

  • Screen Angles
  • Inks
  • Solvents
  • Aniloxes
  • Knowledge of process variables.
  • Ability to achieve high quality standards.
  • Understanding types of Hazardous Waste and the correct use of storage containers.
  • Proper identification and proper labeling of Hazardous Waste.
  • Hazardous waste spill containment and clean up.  (Reference SOP-HW-201-09, and SOP-HW-202-09)
  • Daily housekeeping procedures.

Physical, Mental and Visual Demands:

  • Moderate to heavy physical effort performing duties/work activities; lift up to 60 lbs.
  • Good Communication Skills. 
  • Continuous Mental/Visual attention required,
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required
