Job Description

DEFINITION: The ability to work independently and in a team environment in building maintenance. Performs repairs and modifications of the interior and exteriors of City structures including plumbing, electrical and carpentry work. Supervision of custodial staff.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS.
Essential functions may include but are not limited to the following:
Perform general labor in the following.
● Carpentry - framing, roofing, repair, remodel, build walls (wood/drywall), shelves and benches.
● Electrical - repair and replace switches, plugs, lamps, run electrical conduit and make all necessary repairs according to code.
● Plumbing - repair leaks and cut-offs, run new lines, add valves, replace valves, and install commodes, install and repair sprinkler systems.
● Painting - sanding, preparation, and application of various types of paints.
● Obtain materials needed for repair, load, unload, and transport materials.
● Determine what materials and supplies are needed for repairs and take appropriate actions to complete repairs.
● Diagnose electrical, carpentry or plumbing problems that need repair or modification and take appropriate actions to complete repairs.
● Take task from beginning to completion in a quick and efficient timeframe.
● Manage multiple job orders daily.
● Ability to work in an occupied environment.
● Regular attendance required.


OTHER MISCELLANEOUS DUTIES:
Complete all duties assigned by director, keep clean job site and work area. Must keep tools clean used in performing work.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Supervision of custodial staff.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS.
Standing/Walking primarily on concrete floors. Must be able to lift to 35 lbs. while climbing ladder. Must be able to lift or carry up to 70 lbs., pushing/pulling up to 50lbs. Must be able to handle all the tools necessary to complete tasks assigned, bending, twisting, and reaching overhead. Climb ladders up to 12 ft.


MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT AND WORK AIDES:
Must have working knowledge of hand tools including but not limited to screwdrivers, wrenches, levels, power saws, drills, electric test meters.


ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:
Can work inside and outside, exposed to extreme heat in summer and cold in winter; high humidity; dust; paint fumes; PVC glue and cleaner; risk of physical danger from electrical work and power tools and from work in dangerous locations; noise from saw, drills and grinders being operated.


PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT REQUIRED.
Hard hat, eye protection, gloves, closed-toed footwear, dust mask (as needed)


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE.
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Must have ability to use basic hand tools.
Ability to read and interpret building plans.
Obtain OSHA certification within six months of employment.
Experience in general maintenance is preferred, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing.
knowledge is required.
Opportunity for advancement based on combination of and/or ability and desire to obtain, certification in building trades, management, or higher education.
Valid Texas Class A Driver's License.
