JOB SUMMARY:

Conduct routine and non-routine chemical and microbiological analyses on samples for compliance with state and federal regulations and customer requests in a production environment. Follow quality control requirements specified by EPA method and documents any issues that may arise.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Perform the day-to-day analyses in both the areas of chemistry and microbiology.
  • Provide backup in areas such as inorganic and organic chemistry.
  • Prepare reagent solutions for chemical analysis and media for microbiological analysis.
  • Prepare sample containers for chemical and microbiological samples for external customer requests.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain existing analytical instruments.
  • Work with the Laboratory Manager within the development and/or implementation of new and existing analytical methods per regulatory agency requirements and customer requests.
  • Conduct the organization and entry of all analytical data produced.
  • Provide support for water quality investigations; reports analytical and QC data.
  • Participate in EPA WP/WS Performance Evaluation Studies for maintenance of laboratory certification.
  • Follow all state and NELAC regulatory requirements when producing data.
  • Review and perform preliminary validation of all data generated.
  • Construct and maintaining operating standard laboratory for all analyses performed.
  • Comply with safety standards through the proper handling of hazardous chemical and biological agents in the workplace.
  • Perform general laboratory maintenance including housekeeping and maintenance of glasses, media preparation and inventory or laboratory consumable supplies.
  • Maintain documentation of all quality control analyses on various software programs.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Associates 's degree in chemistry, biology, or mathematic related field or 1 year's equivalent experience in a laboratory or quality control environment.
  • A good working knowledge of either water analysis or quality control.

Experience/Skills/Abilities:

  • Capable of performing multiple assignments concurrently during their work shift. Many assignments are routine and certain assignments are ad hoc per the demands of the department schedule which is driven by sample holding times and customer requests.
  • Capable of completing Initial Demonstration of Capability (IDC) as required by National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Conference (NELAC) for specified methods.
  • The IDC tests the performance of the personnel using the method in the applicable and
  • available quality system matrix (e.g., drinking water). A copy of the certification documenting
  • the completion of the IDC shall be retained in the personnel records of each affected.

  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations and basic statistics.
  • Proficient in Word and Excel for creating or updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), for quality control charts and tables and for data entry.
  • Keep records accurately and neatly and prepare clean and concise reports.
  • Able to schedule work within area of responsibility.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Skilled in operating various software programs.
