The Urology section of James A. Haley Veterans Health System is seeking a board-eligible or board-certified Urologist to join the practice at the Tampa Veterans Hospital. We are looking for individuals with broad experience in all aspects of clinical and operative urology.

DUTIES

- Clinic - Seeing a variety of disease processes, including workup and management. This may also include minor procedures.
- Operating Room - We are a heavy operating service. We have ORs in Gainesville as well as an outpatient surgery center in Lake City. We have an expanding robotics program with a new Davinci Xi dual console robot. We have the ability to handle all levels of operative complexity.
- Teaching - You will be expected to serve as a mentor and teacher for urology residents in an accredited urology program as we always have a PGY 2 and PGY 5 resident on service. The opportunity exists but is not expected to participate in lectures, research and other hands-on teaching activities with the urology residents.
- Research - Ample opportunity exists but is not expected.
- Call - Typically split between the VA and University faculty. Call is taken in 1 week increments and usually amounts to 1 call period every 8-10 weeks.

 Full-Time; Mon-Fri; 7:30am-4:00pm

This position is eligible for  the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program up to $200,000 over the course of 5 years.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

 

  • Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.

 

  • Licensure: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

 

  • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: 
    • (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR

 

    • [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR

 

    • (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.
      Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.

 

  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

 

Additional Requirement:  Graduate from an accredited Urologic residency training program. Board Certification: Must be Board Certified by the American Board of Urology. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

Work Schedule:  Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm

Position Summary: Serves as a Urologist within the Martinsburg VA Medical Center. The incumbent's clinical and surgical duties involve diseases of the male and female urinary tract system, kidneys, adrenal glands, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra, and the male reproductive organs (testes, epididymis, vas deferens, seminal vesicles, prostate and penis). The incumbent must be Board Certified or board eligible by the American Board of Urology and have extensive clinical knowledge in the area of Urologic Surgery. Incumbent may be required to provide mentoring and supervision to affiliated medical school students.

Surgical Role:
Participates in the operating room commensurate with technical abilities: performs preoperative and post-operative evaluation for surgical patients and discusses with staff: Surgery of Penis, Urethra, Orchiectomy (Simple-Radical), Ureter, Bladder, and Kidney. Participates in team approach to ensure appropriate patient assessments, anticipates patient care needs, prevents avoidable complications, and achieves optimal patient conditions. Acts in adherence to surgical care in accordance with ethical principles.

Clinic Role:
Comprehensive care of ambulatory patients in the outpatient Urology Clinic as well as care of all inpatients and patients presenting to the Emergency Department; Performs Clinic Examinations, Management of New Patient Consultations, Diagnosis and Treatment.

Administrative Role:
Appropriate charting including the timely documentation of patient assessment and plan of care. Completion of encounters and dictations of operative notes. Participation in committees if requested.

Supervisory Controls
The Urologist will report to the section Chief of Urology as primary supervisor. Work duties must be under the supervision of the Chief of Surgery.

Customer Service Requirements
Effectively Communicates with and utilizes other disciplines (e.g., nursing, medicine) to facilitate treatment planning and implementation. With few exceptions, participates effectively in meetings, treatment planning conferences, etc. Establishes and maintains good working relationships with management, co-workers, patients, and the general public. Incumbent will display a cooperative attitude and will effectively work together to implement the organization's missions and goals.

Age Specific Criteria
Age-specific care, as identified in the Age-Specific Competencies, including knowledge of changes associated with aging and principles of growth and development relevant to the adult and geriatric age groups; ability to assess and interpret data about the patient's status' and ability to identify age-specific needs and provide the appropriate care based upon the age related factors noted.

Interpersonal Relationships
Demonstrates the ability to establish effective working relationships within the surgical department and with co-workers, patients, support service staff, nursing staff, physicians and other Medical Center staff. Maintains self-control and responds effectively to the requirements of a complex, high-intensity work situation.
