Job Description
The Substance Abuse Counselor In-Training (SAC-IT) functions as an integral member of the interdisciplinary team providing treatment, support and follow-up to patients with substance use disorders. The individual must follow departmental and organizational policies and procedures regarding documentation, billing and ethical conduct while serving our patients. This position is a training position that provides supervised work experience required for advancement to a full practice credential as a Substance Abuse Counselor (SAC) or Clinical Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC). The Clinical Supervisor exercises supervisory responsibility over this role regarding all activities including, but not limited to, counselor development, counselor skill assessment and performance evaluation, staff management and administration, and professional responsibility. This role promotes to Substance Abuse Counselor upon completion of supervised hours and obtaining a SAC or CSAC credential.
This position can only be held for the duration of the SAC-IT credential (initial granting and two renewals). Failure to obtain the SAC or CSAC credential within the SAC-IT duration makes the individual ineligible to continue in this position.
EDUCATION
For positions requiring education beyond a high school diploma or equivalent, educational qualifications must be from an institution whose accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher Education and Accreditation.
Minimum Required: DSPS-required curriculum to obtain the SAC-IT certificate: Substance abuse education must include at least 100 hours of specialized education in the performance dimensions of assessment, counseling, case management, patient education and professional responsibility. See SPS 161.
Preferred/Optional: Associate degree in counseling, psychology, sociology, human services or other related areas of study.
EXPERIENCEMinimum Required: Clinical experience in the course of counselor training and education (e.g. clinical labs, internships or other related experience including applicable volunteer work).

The following licensure(s), certification(s), registration(s), etc., are required for this position. Licenses with restrictions are subject to review to determine if restrictions are substantially related to the position.
Minimum Required: Substance Abuse Counselor in Training (SAC-IT) certificate OR eligible to obtain Substance Abuse Counselor in Training (SAC-IT) certificate at time of hire awarded by the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS). Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) within three months of hire.
NOTE: The SAC-IT credential can only be renewed twice after the initial certification. The supervised work experience required for a SAC certification pursuant to Wis. Admin. Code § SPS 161.02(6) must be completed within the timeframe of the original certification plus two (2) renewal periods. Loss of the SAC-IT without advancement to SAC removes eligibility to maintain this position.
Preferred/Optional: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) at time of hire.
