Job Title: Maintenance SMS Analyst

Department: Safety

Reports to: Director of Safety

Location: Ypsilanti, MI (YIP)


Duties and Responsibilities

  • The SMS Data Analyst reports to the Director of Airline Safety
  • Collect, analyze, and manage data being received from various departments.
  • Perform trend analysis and make recommendations to the Director of Maintenance and Director of Quality Control.
  • Enter SMS related information into ETQ Reliance database.
  • Collect and analyze maintenance event data to raise awareness of operational risks and to facilitate the application of corrective actions that mitigate those risks.
  • Assist in the administration and management of the Safety Reporting System, safety reports, safety risk assessments, and root cause analysis.
  • Acquire, analyze, and present shared and reported safety information with subject-matter experts and department leadership via cross departmental communications.
  • Assists with Maintenance Reporting Programs such as ASAP, VDRP, MEDA, and maintenance safety reporting.
  • Prepare reports that include the facts, analysis, conclusions, findings, and recommendations associated with reported events.
  • Prepare reports and presentations as required.
  • Conduct research in support of event-specific regulatory issues.
  • Assure corrective measures are executed and tracked to final resolution.
  • Evaluate safety report data and create reports identifying trends and risks.
  • Track and trend monthly and yearly metrics.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 4-year degree from an accredited university or 5+ years additional relevant experience
  • 4+ years' experience in Part 121 Airline Maintenance or comparable aviation experience
  • 4+ years' experience with data analytics, risk management, or Safety Management Systems (SMS) under FAR Part 5, and audits
  • Advanced skills in computer programs or computer programming
  • Experience in compiling reports and metrics necessary to track safety trends across multiple platforms.
  • Experience in tracking and trending compliance metrics, objectives, and occurrences.
  • Experience in managing the collection and analysis of data including interpreting data, identifying trends, and evaluating the effectiveness and efficiency of company operations.
  • Working knowledge of regulations governing commercial aviation
  • Ability to acquire, analyze, and present information gained through independent research, coordination with team members, discussions with subject-matter experts, or others through appropriate methods.
  • Ability to conduct or support data and/or analyses to provide meaningful and actionable insight that improve Kalitta Air’s safety performance.
  • Skilled in business intelligence and/or data reporting tools
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite
  • High performance orientation, ability to work well under pressure, prioritize projects, meet deadlines, and maintain flexibility.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and time management skills
  • Self-starter must have a positive attitude and strong desire for success and work well with others.
  • Ability to work under stress in a fast paced, deadline driven environment.
  • Must have the ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Available for occasional overnight travel (5%)
