Job purpose

To be knowledgeable in shipboard electrical installations, troubleshooting and repair with regulatory bodies such as ABS, Coast Guard, (IEEE) Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and NAVY. Experience in installing 440 and 220V temporary services, including shore power and rotation checks, including Lock Out/ Tag Out safety procedures. Master, 1st, 2nd and 3rd class levels are based on proficiency, knowledge, skills and abilities.

Duties and responsibilities

1. Construct components, sub-units and simple models; adapt standard equipment.

2. Troubleshoot and correct equipment malfunctions, performs planned preventive maintenance or assist with overhaul maintenance using diagnostic equipment for which training has been completed.

3. Work from blueprints, drawings, layouts, work orders or other specifications, performing work according to the latest revision of the National Electrical Code (NEC) or local jurisdictional authority.

4. Conduct basic tests which may require test equipment/set-ups or procedures as well as subjective judgement in measurements.

5. Must be able to work safely with systems operating at levels not exceeding 480 volts (medium voltage).

6. Performs maintenance using oral and/or written instructions.

7. Perform troubleshooting/problem identification and resolution of a routine nature.

8. Respond to various types of emergencies and provide assistance as appropriate based on sills, knowledge, and ability.

9. Perform other site support tasks incidental to electrical maintenance assignments.

10. Recommend solutions to problems in design and field fit during facility construction and remodeling; perform field fit work when approved by the customer.

11. Perform maintenance using oral and/or written instructions.

12. Provide field design and specification of materials not included in engineers’ drawings and plans and provide “as-built” drawings at completion.

13. Plans details of working procedure by determining replacement needs or new material required and develops a logical approach to correct the problems.

14. Analyzes circuits, wiring diagrams and drawings to install, repair, service or replace electrical devices and system.

15. Receives wiring diagrams, specifications and instructions from supervisor covering emergency and scheduled repairs, installation, and electrical inspection work to be performed.

16. Performs work requiring a thorough knowledge of electrical theory and principles, statutory codes, properties of materials and principles of operation of electrical equipment. Starts up and shuts down and in line with OSHA requirements.

17. Services electrical equipment by checking, testing, and replacing faulty components, circuits, printed circuit board, and similar electronic devices.

18. Installs, repairs, and maintains communication cables, power distribution cables, then splicing pieces as required.

19. Fabricates parts if not commercially available, using machine and hand tools common to the trade.

20. Determines need for, analyzes, and makes necessary running adjustments, repairs, and overhauls.

21. Advises and cautions operators and mechanics about potential electrical problems and inherent dangers involved.

22. Notifies Supervisor of potentially dangerous electrical equipment noted and corrective action taken.

23. May be part of a mechanic team on major installations, working with other trades such as machinist, or pipefitters.

24. May be called on to do temporary repairs or other work after normal working hours and on weekends.

25. Must be proficient in shipboard electrical installations, troubleshooting, and repair in accordance with regulatory bodies such as ABS, Coast Guard, IEEE, and NAVY.

26. Must be familiar with Lock Out / Tag Out and shipyard Safety procedures.

27. Have experience with installing 440 and 220 V, including shore power, as well as rotation checks.

28. Install facility industrial wiring as per direction.

29. Should be accountable for pass down log, have good communication skills and have dependable transportation.

30. When supervisor is not available must be able to stand in and perform basic duties of a supervisor. Able to give clear direction and make simple deck plate decision.

Work Environment

Work is regularly performed in outside weather conditions, including rain and extreme heat, near moving mechanical parts and includes occasional exposure to wet and/or humid conditions and to vibration.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

The employee is required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 70 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Position Type/ Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work could be Sunday through Sunday. This position periodically requires long hours and weekend work and nights. Regular and predictable on-site attendance is an essential function and a prerequisite to perform other essential functions of the position.

Travel

Travel is primarily local during the business day, although periodic out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be expected.

Required Education and Experience

  1. High school degree or equivalent
  2. Apprentice or trade school
  3. Master Class – 10+ years of exp. in trade, 1st Class – 5+ years of exp. in trade, 2nd Class – 3+ years of exp. in trade, 3rd Class – 1+ years of exp. in trade
    1. Verifiable marine or industrial experience.

Preferred Education or Experience

Education based on requirements that are job-related and consistent with the business necessity.

• Must provide own hand tools as designated per trades specialty

Experience with hydraulic pumping units, hybrid relay, and standard electronic module controllers preferred.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

• Must be able to work ALL assigned shift hours as production needs dictate.

• Must be able to learn to read, interpret and utilize blueprints.

• Must be able to use a variety of tools and measuring devices during this process.

• This is an industrial environment involving extreme heights, confined spaces, physical labor and various weather conditions within a shipyard environment.

• Must be able to pass Physical Agility Test.
