GENERAL PURPOSE: Under general supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled labor in the installation, maintenance, and repair of water Distribution/Collection systems, Water/Wastewater treatment plants, and according to job specifications and technical codes.


PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs a variety of semi-skilled labor in the installation, maintenance, and repair of water distribution and collection systems, sewer systems, lift stations, pumps, utility meters, and other components.
  • Works independently, and makes appropriate decisions based on work experience; duties will vary according to job assignment and individual skills.
  • Performs maintenance and repairs within scope of authority, and in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures; notifies supervisors of repair problems beyond the scope of authority.
  • Identifies and repairs leaks or breaks in the distribution and collection system; clears obstructions; replaces and repairs pipes, hydrants and valves; locates and marks sewer and water lines.
  • Operates and maintains a variety of specialized equipment in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures; identifies and reports mechanical problems requiring additional repair.
  • Ensures that safety rules and regulations are followed; utilizes proper safety precautions in all work performed; reports safety hazards, equipment problems and emergency situations.
  • Ensures that hazardous materials are cleaned up and stored according to City policy and procedures; responds to emergencies as needed and performs tasks in the interest of public safety and property protection during emergencies.
  • May coordinate work of maintenance crew and assign specific tasks to crew members.
  • Hours: Monday through Friday, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, rotating on call position that may include holidays or weekends.
  • Regular and timely attendance is required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

High School diploma or equivalent; and two years' experience in the maintenance of infrastructure systems, preferably with the City of San Angelo; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Licenses or Certifications:

  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver License with a good driving record.
  • Applicants with an out-of-state driver license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure.
  • Must obtain a Commercial Driver License, Class B, within six months of hire.
  • Must obtain Class D - Water / Wastewater Operator license from Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) within one year of hire.

Required Knowledge of:

  • City policies and procedures.
  • Tools and equipment used in utility system maintenance.
  • Operation, maintenance, repair, and safety standards for motorized equipment and vehicles.
  • State and City safety rules and regulations, including safety practices in hazardous traffic environments.

Required Skill in:

  • Operating and maintaining tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Prioritizing multiple tasks, projects, and demands.
  • Following and maintaining safety standards.
  • Closely following verbal and written instructions and procedures.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers and the public.

Physical Demands / Work Environment:

  • Work is performed indoors and outdoors.
  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions.
  • Ability to work around extreme noise and mechanical, electrical, and other conditions that may be adverse.
  • Required to perform moderate physical work, and lift and carry up to 100 pounds.
