Fuels Monitoring Technician II

(2) Two Positions

Fuels Management

Department of Natural Resources

Hourly Wage: $16.53/Regular/Furlough


Position functions under the Yakama Nation (YN), Division of Natural Resources (DNR) and Fuels Management Program. The primary responsibilities include assisting the Fuels Manager and Planner in planning, directing, implementing, and monitoring of fuels management activities which protect, maintain, or restore the natural resources and within the Yakama Reservation. The incumbent will conduct Hazardous Fuels Reduction (HFR) treatment monitoring in the form of pre and post treatment data collections. Incumbent will periodically perform HFR treatment layout in the YN forested area. Incumbent will periodically administrate and monitor HFR project work including prescribed fire, thinning, hand and machine piling.


Examples of Work Performed:

Collect field data relating to fuels management projects, compiles various resource data, prepares data summaries, generates graphs, and prepares maps of project areas.

Monitor, conduct surveys, and perform treatment layout with technical field equipment GPS, IPAD, and Avenza to assist the GIS specialists with mapping to assure proper and consistent application of Fuels Management prescriptions.

Assists in preparation of training programs and conducts on the job training to familiarize Fuels staff and Crewmember personnel with the technical application of resource survey/data collection.

Participates in wildfire suppression, pre-suppression, and prescribed fire activities.

Attends various fire training courses.

Responsible for the operation of a tribal or federally owned/leased motor vehicle.

Abide by Yakama Nation Rules and Regulations.

Other Duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of Fuels Management practices, including mechanical fuels reduction, prescribed burning, timber stand improvement, and other activities designed to protect, maintain, or enhance the natural resources of the Yakama Nation.

Knowledge of data collection, procedure and ability to interpret, analyze and summarize data.

Knowledge of Forest Management practices on the Yakama Reservation, including both even and uneven-aged management practices.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with supervisors and co-workers.

Must be physically and mentally capable and willing to endure extended periods of work under a wide variety of environmental condition and be in good physical condition, be able to ascend and descend steep topography through rough forest terrain.


Minimum Requirements:

Must be physically fit and able to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions.

Must be able to pass the National Wildfire Coordinating Group national standard fitness test at arduous work capacity level.

Must have ability to obtain or working toward Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1) and Fire Effects Monitor (FEMO) qualifications.

Must be 18 years of age or older.

Required to pass a pre-employment drug test.

Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driving permit.

Enrolled Yakama Preference, but all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.


Preferred Requirements:

Prior wildland firefighting experience at arduous work capacity.

Completion of NWCG course S-290: Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior or ability to obtain.

Satisfactory academic course completion in Forestry, Fuels Management, Fire Management, or closely related field. Two-year Associate Degree completion is preferred.

One season of experience with Forestry, Fuels Management, or Fire Management is preferred but not required.
