Alternative Laboratories is hiring for an R&D Scientist at our Fort Myers, Florida location. This is a significant role within the company and the R&D formulation function.

Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop and make lab and pilot scale samples of custom dietary supplement blends, functional nutrients, and powdered beverages.
  • Develop formulations for a variety of dosage (capsules, powders, tablets, and granulating) and delivery forms that support Sales and Marketing needs.
  • Interpret customer requests into prototypes. Respond to customer requests in a timely and thoughtful manner.
  • Manage R&D process from ideation through successful, efficient, reproducible production.
  • Prioritize and manage multiple projects to achieve project deadlines.
  • Vet, categorize, and prioritize new business and new product development.
  • Work within R&D and Operations teams to troubleshoot technical, formulation, and processing issues during product development and Commercialization. Identify things that can go wrong in advance and develop preventive solutions.
  • Work with the Purchasing team and R&D Scientists to generate new formulations, and sourcing of new or existing raw materials for cost analysis and feasibility.
  • Maintain accurate project information, formulations, and specifications.
  • Collaborate with the Quality Assurance department in the development of proper documentation for new formula and product development projects.
  • Work with R&D teams, manufacturing, supply chain, etc. on scale-up and transfer of developed formulations to the plant.
  • Responsible for maintaining raw material inventory for day-to-day project activity
  • Ability to train others, effectively delegate assignments, and manage timelines.
  • Assist with the implementation of SOPs and other regulatory requirements.
  • Create monthly reports tracking project progress.
  • Keep equipment logbooks in accordance with R&D guidelines.


Required Qualifications:

  • Thorough understanding of developing dietary supplements.
  • Hands-on experience operating Tablet, Capsule, Granulation manufacturing process equipment such as Tablet Press, Capsule Filling, Coating, wet and dry Granulator, FBD, encapsulation technology etc.
  • Accountability for your own projects and timelines.
  • Knowledge of and experience with flavoring systems.
  • Accurately collecting, recording, maintaining, and reporting scientific data.
  • Carefully document and communicate project details internally and to the customer.
  • Adherence to company's rules and regulations and active SOPs and cGMPs.
  • Comply with company procedural guidelines, laboratory procedures, and safety programs.
  • Effective communication with others, especially on key project issues.
  • Maintain company and customer confidentiality.

Qualifications:

  • B.S. or higher in Food Technology, Food Science, Food Engineering, Pharmaceutical sciences, or Chemical engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years prior experience in food, dietary supplements, or similar industry.
  • Ability to develop and make lab samples of custom dietary supplements based on nutritional targets as well as to consumer sensory acceptance.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Word, and Excel specifically).
  • Good interpersonal and presentation skills to share development work within the organization and with customers. Strong documentation, organization, troubleshooting and time management skills.
  • Familiarity with good manufacturing practices (GMPs) and regulations for dietary supplements (DSHEA) preferred.
  • Able to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work in a physically challenging environment: lift 25 pounds and move up to 50 pounds when working with bulk ingredients, operate pilot scale equipment.
