Evidence Technician

Law Enforcement Operations

Department of Public Safety

Hourly Wage: $17.36/Regular/Full-Time


The Evidence Technician is responsible for handling Public Safety evidence, property transactions and dispositions. Job duties include the proper disposal and storage of evidence and personal property while adhering to all legal requirements. Incumbent will be responsible for the processing of a variety of program documents and records, utilizing the Public Safety evidence management software.


Examples of Work Performed:

Performs duties & responsibilities in accordance with the Public Safety Department organizational chart and established chain of command.

Enter, modify, track and/or retrieve information and data using spreadsheets and/or customized database applications.

Coordinate transactions; receive, release, and transport evidence and property to department facilities, personnel, courts, laboratories, owners, and outside agencies in accordance with established policies and legal requirements.

Prepare comprehensive records and reports on the collection, preservation, location, and disposition of evidence as required by law.

Secure and control valuable property, firearms and other weapons, ammunition, and narcotics for evidence/property.

Handle and process bio-hazardous and hazardous materials and other potential allergens using personal protective equipment (PPE).

Process and/or destroy evidence and documents in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Lift and move heavy and bulky items, use ladders and hydraulic lifting equipment to stock and retrieve items from shelves and perform warehousing duties on a regular basis.

Operate light and heavy equipment such as trucks, forklifts, and dollies to transport items and supplies as needed.

Provide training to various individuals and law enforcement personnel on proper handling and packaging of evidence/property and on bio-hazard requirements.

Testifying in court on the integrity and chain of custody of evidence presented in criminal proceedings.

Assist with inventory, ordering, processing, and distributing department supplies.

Ensures official documents received are verified, logged, or scanned, and forwarded to appropriate staff for review and if necessary, action.

Work performed is completed using the automated public safety records management system.

Maintains communication with key command staff and criminal investigators on emergency situations, critical incidents, and important activities.

Operate a program assigned vehicle to perform duties.

Perform other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of warehouse practices.

Knowledge of office methods and procedures, including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook, office equipment, filing systems, sorting and routine mail, shipping and receiving packages.

Sufficient writing skulls to transcribe, compose, edit, and maintain various documents, reports, and correspondences, with ability to pay close attention to detail.

Skill in working under established deadlines and timeframes.

Ability to work independently or in a team setting.

Maintain confidentiality with sensitive matters and policies.

Willing to work around and handle potential allergens, narcotics, bodily fluids, bio-hazardous and hazardous materials with property training and PPE.

Ability to lift and move heavy objects weighing up to 50 lbs. routinely.

Willing and able to work mechanical lifting devices.

Willing to learn and operate forklifts and other requirements including various transportation vehicles.

Knowledge of safe practices for handling weapons and valuables.

Knowledge of alpha-numeric filing systems.

Skill in dealing effectively with the public.

Ability to adhere to high standards of personal conduct on and off the job.

Minimum keyboarding and typing skill at 60 words per minute.

Ability to participate in mandatory training and meetings.


Minimum Requirements:

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.

3 years of experience as an administrative assistant, and/or warehouse inventory/supply clerk. A combination of experience and/or education considered.

Required to maintain current certification for First Aid/CPR.

Required to sign a code of conduct and understand sanctions for misconduct.

Must have or immediately obtain minimum Federal training requirements for Property and Evidence Room Management.

Required to pass a pre-employment background check. No misdemeanor or felony convictions.

Required to pass a pre-employment drug test.

Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driving Permit.
