JOB DESCRIPTION (HEAD COACH)

Qualifications

  3. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Education find appropriate and acceptable

Job Goal: To provide maximum learning opportunities for all participants and to provide each student with opportunities for obtaining the knowledge, experience, and skills necessary to become a positive contributor to the program. To help each participating student achieve an appreciation for the values of discipline and sportsmanship, and an increased level of self-esteem. Treat all participants, coaches, and staff in the program with respect and dignity.

Evaluation - Performance of a head coach will be evaluated using the Coaching Evaluation Instrument pursuant to the Employee Handbook. Each head coach will be evaluated on a three year rotation. The Activity Coordinators will have primary responsibility for the evaluation with input from the building principal. The evaluation instrument will be able:

  1. To relate to the employee his/her present observable level of performance

  2. To meet any requirements established in the Coaches/Employee Handbook

  3. To improve school employee efficiency and effectiveness.

  4. To build and maintain an appropriate educational program for the students of the Mason City Community Schools.

General Statement of Responsibility - The Head Coach for each sport has the responsibility of conducting the sport in the best interest of the school district by adhering to the policies and regulations of the MCCSD Board of Education, the Iowa High School Athletic Association, the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, the Iowa Alliance Conference, and any administrative practices, procedures, or directives.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Program Responsibilities

The Head Coach:

  • Has full responsibility for the overall coordination of the total lower level program

  • Is in charge of assigning duties of assistant coaches working under his/her supervision

  • Is responsible for keeping practice periods for the sport within the confines of the time specified by the Activity Coordinators and with due consideration to the coaching staff and welfare of the participants.

  • Is responsible for the proper maintenance of all equipment under the jurisdiction of the program.

  • Is directly responsible for a complete inventory of the equipment used for the sport to be filed with the Activity Coordinators within three weeks after the conclusion of the season.

  • Is responsible for recommending purchase of equipment, supplies, and uniforms as needed. A proposed budget for the subsequent year will be filed with the Activity Coordinators within four weeks of the conclusion of the season.

  • Plans and implements a regular program of practice in season.

  • Establishes safety and health rules. The coach provides for the safety and health of his/her athletes by establishing rules to insure proper conduct and enforces them in relationships to department and school district policies. Dangerous conditions also include inappropriate behavior and poor discipline.

  • Does not hold a practice on Sundays, holidays, or when school is dismissed early due to extreme temperatures or inclement weather without prior permission form the Activity Coordinators or Principal.

  • Concludes practice by 6:00 pm on Wednesday each week.

  • Advises all lower level coaches, as appropriate, to facilitate a sequential program of skill development.

  • Purchases nothing for the sport without written approval from the Activity Coordinators.

  • Promotes the sport by prompt and accurate score reporting to local media and the Bound Platform.

  • Makes recommendations to the Activity Coordinator in matters of scheduling.

  • Cooperates with all other coaches in providing the optimum school sport program for all students of the Mason City Community Schools.

  • Keeps abreast of new developments, innovative ideas and techniques, health, and safety considerations by attendance at clinics, work-shops, and reading in the field.

  • Performs other duties as related to his/her assignments as designated by the building principal and/or Activity Coordinators.

Personal Responsibilities

  • Coaches individual participants in the skills necessary for excellent achievement using appropriate instructional and conditioning techniques.

  • Helps to establish performance criteria for eligibility in interscholastic competition in all sports.

  • Enforces competition in all sports.

  • Does not allow athletes to participate in a practice session without the proper paperwork and permissions filled out and completed prior to the start of the season including physical forms, concussion forms, and parent permissions.

  • Thoroughly explains eligibility requirements and participation rules to all squad members and consistently enforce the policy

  • Fills out transportation requests with the Activity Coordinator / Athletic Secretary.

  • Ensures all athletes are transported by means of school-authorized transportation only.

  • Ensures that for out of town games - athletes must return in the same manner in which they traveled to the contest. If an athlete wishes to return home with his parents, the parents must contact the coach before such permission is granted. If the student-athlete must travel from a contest with someone other than a parent, permission must be granted by the Activity Coordinator more than 24 hours in advance and approval will be communicated to the head coach.

  • When appropriate, completes and file injury reports.

  • Demonstrates self-control and poise in all areas relating to coaching responsibilities, including sideline conduct at contests, toward players, officials, and other game officials.

  • Provides for adequate supervision of his/her athletes in the locker room, practice, contest areas, and on buses. The coach must be immediately accessible, must be able to oversee the entire practice and/or contest area and systematically rotate to all parts of the activity area.

  • Does not issue keys to students under any circumstances.

  • Does not smoke or use any tobacco or nicotine products while on duty or in the presence of any student.

  • Does not allow profanity under any circumstances from players or coaches.

  • Instructs athletes on proper use and care of equipment.

  • Warns players about the possibility of being injured.

  • Does not allow non-certified volunteers or aides to organize or supervise any practices nor sit on the bench, advise, supervise or be a part of any team during a game or meet.
