The Assistant Controller is responsible for all aspects of financial management, including cash flow, accounts receivable, inventory, capital assets, accounts payable, inter-company transactions and other related accruals and receivables. They must have the desire to act as a business partner, supporting decision making by thoroughly understanding the business, providing accurate and timely information to the management team, taking the initiative and support Operations to identify, evaluate and implement costs saving projects (OPEX) that will assist in improving the overall profitability of the plant.


Job Summary: This role provides leadership and direction to the Finance team, in support of the Controller.


Required Education and Experience:

Required Qualifications:

• Undergraduate Degree in Business, Finance or Accounting

• Completion of a recognized Account Designation

• Strong communicator in English language, both written and oral .

• A minimum of 5 years of in automotive industry

• Proficient in Microsoft office; Advanced knowledge of Excel and Word; exposure to computerized manufacturing accounting systems is preferred

• High level of time management and organizational skills

• Familiar with Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations

• Strong leadership skills, excellent analytical and problem solving skills

• An independent critical thinker who displays attention to detail

• Excellent organizational, interpersonal and time management skills with the ability to multi-task

• Experience in working in an AS400 environment (CMS experience is preferred)

• Knowledge of Bill 198 internal control and Bill 187 requirements


Essential Functions:

  • Demonstrate focus and drive to achieve targets, budgets and results using an assertive style.
  • Desire to become a business partner to the Controller by thoroughly understanding the business, providing accurate and timely information to the management team, taking the initiative to identify and implement costs savings projects that will assist in providing the overall profitability of the plant.
  • Desire an ability to learn about the business and understand the production process by attending and participating in daily production meetings and regularly walking through the production floor to develop the necessary link between the production processes and the financial statements..
  • Educate and train departmental managers of the financial impact of their decisions, and hold them accountable to a predetermined budget.
  • Responsible for creating and maintaining bill of materials with the direction of the Engineering team and other departments. This includes BOM entry into CMS ability to independently confirm equipment, run standards, labor rates, efficiency rates, material usage, purchased component costs and other metrics that define the BOM.
  • Analyze the financial impact of proposed changes to the bill of materials and perform labor overhead and cycle time studies to improve the accuracy of the bill of materials.
  • Detail variance reporting by program and part number on a monthly basic including a review and validation of absorption during the month; schedule regular meeting with program management and engineering staff to confirm program costs are aligned.
  • Assist the Controller in preparing the annual budget for the plant
  • Work closely with Controller in working with departmental heads to identify any inefficiencies in processes and potential cost saving initiatives including freight costs savings, outsourced production parts savings, improvements in inventory management, reduced scrap and develop and lead projects to ensure timely realization of the identified costs savings
  • Review accounts receivable aging each month and proactively follow-up on collections issues with subordinates. Also consistently think beyond the borders of finance to help create a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Assist the Controller with the local annual external audit by completing the Corporate audit kit with all the required supporting reconciliations and documentation, ensuring that no audit adjustments are identified during the audit
  • Provide all the necessary information to the internal audit department during their audit and immediately address any concerns that are identified
  • Comply with corporate reporting requirements on weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual basis ensuring compliance with Martinrea accounting policies and procedures.
  • Thoroughly understand all capital spending projects prior to submitting to Corporate for review and approval, including payback calculations. Collect and review all information required for capital requests, ensuring all local approval has been received
  • Assist with the physical inventory counts and inventory valuation. As well as review and approve standard and non-standard journal entries each month.
  • Proactively provide continuous improvement ideas relating to both financial and production processes.
  • Work closely with departmental heads to identify any inefficiencies in processes and potential cost saving initiatives including freight cost savings, outsourced production cost savings, improvements in inventory management, reduced scrap and develop and lead projects to ensure tiemly realization of the identified costs savings.
  • Provide support and contribute to the quality and environmental requirements and regulations as well as the implementation and maintenance of Martinrea Manufacturing Systems at the plant.
  • Assist with the review of customer quotations prior to submitting to Corporate for review and approval.
  • Thoroughly understand all capital spending projects prior to submitting to corporate for review and approval, including payback calculations. Collect and review all information required for capital requests, ensuring all local approval has been received.
  • Abide by al Company policies including but not limited to the following Health and Safety, Quality and Environmental Systems, Human Resources policies, and the Martinrea Employee handbook.
  • Lead the physical inventory counts and inventory valuation.

Drive physical inventory count process posting and valuation as details in MRE financial policy

Modify physical inventory instructions, if need be, and conduct training classes for associates assigned to count and audit for the quaterly physical inventory.

Preparation for slow moving inventory reporting and LCM analysis.

Conduct inventory rewerve analysis on a quarterly basis and generate reports for senior management. As well as assist with any external audits: sales tax, property, etc.
